Baby Names

Fun way to eliminate names

My DH and I have been going back and forth about names, and came up with a list of our "top 8" (the number doesn't matter for this exercise.)  We each independently ranked them 1-8, 1 being our top pick, 8 being our last. Anything that came in 6 or above was tossed out, so now we're down to 2.  You can adjust the numbers depending on the size of your list.  It was worth it for the laughs, anyways- my #1 was his #8, and vice versa.  Just thought I'd pass this along.  If your DH is a sports fan like mine, he might especially enjoy this ranking/pool exercise, sort of like a basketball bracket.

Don't have it in front of me right now, but it boiled down to Dahlia or Flora.  Other picks included Maeve, Maisie, Rose, Lily, Willa, and Holly.

Obviously, we seem to be stuck on flower names.

The tricky part now is that my mom HATES Dahlia, which I know shouldn't matter, but it's hard for me to just ignore that.  It was DH's grandmother's name, and one of my grandmas was Grace, so we were thinking Dahlia Grace.  Flora Grace also sounds good to me.

My number one was Maeve and his number one was Rose.
  • Dahlia Grace is lovely! Fwiw, my grandmother's name is Flora and she dislikes it so much she asked all kids/grandkids etc to not name babies after her (but to use a flower name if we want to honor her).

I love both your options.  Dahlia Grace is really elegant.  Perhaps your mom could use a nn like Lia.

I was thinking the same. Lia is a viable--and lovely--nn option. Dahlia Grace is beautiful.
  • What's funny is my mom has given the baby the not-serious in utero nickname "Lolly Lou" which I have co-opted because I think it's funny (It's sort of a tradition in my family to give the baby a ridiculous in utero nn. My brother was Roscoe)

However, Lolly Lou doesn't seem that far off as a real nn for Dahlia...I doubt we would seriously call her that after birth but maybe I'll suggest it ;) JK JK.

Thanks for the support, ladies.  Good luck in your "brackets" if you do them!  It was all my husband's idea and I'm glad we did it!
  • Love Dahlia!
