Reflux

We went to the doctor today. Said my LO has the start of acid reflux. Did not give medicine however, they want me to express breast milk and feed him 2 ozs plus a tablespoon of rice cereal for a week and see how he does. I need to do this every 2 hours. I've been nursing directly so I had nothing in freezer or refrigerator. Thankfully I pumped before we left and had 3 ounces so now after each feeding I will have to pump. I have enough now for a couple bottles. He is a night nurser so I'm worried about how he will do. They also said to position him at a 30 degree angle. Hoping this helps. Not excited about giving cereal every feeding though and not sure how I feel about this as we just did a feeding and he is crying wanting more to eat :( He got weighed and is gaining fine.

Anyone else go through this?

Re: Reflux

  • Do you not want to use meds or the pedi doesn't want to prescribe them?

My DS had reflux and was on meds until 6/7 months. I'm pretty sure DD is headed in the same direction. Holding DS upright for 20 minutes after eating was also helpful. I don't know that I would agree to do what your pedi suggested though, personally.

  • I wouldn't like that advice, at all. Our baby is on zantac for her reflux, we made no other changes.

  • That would be a big "no thank you" to the doctor. I would get a second opinion before making those changes.
  • I'm going too. I'm going to call another doctor tomorrow.

I'm up with him now and he has a nasty cough and keeps pulling on his ear. No fever just sounds awful. He couldn't even eat hardly.
  • Pulling on ear? Isn't that a sign of an ear infection?
  • Yes. I said something to the doctor today and she said he doesn't have anything wrong with his ear but she didn't check. I'm gonna call my doctor and get him in today.
  • I'm sorry you are dealing with this :( hope you get something figured out today!

  • Didn't get any answers today. I think the doctors talked before I came in.

Said his cough is related to reflux. My question is if it's irritating his throat and causing a cough shouldn't he take something besides cereal? I'm so frustrated I hate seeing him like this
