Sibling gifts

Not sure if this has been discussed yet. I want to get my daughter a gift from her baby sister when she arrives. Has anyone done this? What do you get them? I want it to be "big sister" related. She will be 3.5 when baby arrives. I don't just want to get her a toy.

Re: Sibling gifts

  • I am planning to buy my then almost 3 year old an American Girl doll bitty baby when baby arrives. I figure it's nicer than just a regular toy. She is really into babies and I think she'll really like having a special baby of her own.

  • I haven't decided on this yet. DS is 9 so I don't think he needs one although it's still a nice way to start off the relationship. We did get him a Cinderella story book from his soon to be baby sister(for him to read to her when she comes home) for Christmas and he absolutely loved it. So that made me kind of want to get something after seeing how much he loved that I just don't know what.
  • Maybe a kid friendly friendship type bracelet?

  • Maybe a baby doll so she can take care of her baby while you take care of yours! And i agree, with JenLa21, a friendship bracelet would be so sweet. Maybe get a matching one for your newborn, and give to her when she is older.
  • Build a bear has some matching tiny stuffed bears to go with the big ones. We bought my dd1 a puppy with a matching tiny one for our youngest that dd1 took care of while dd2 was still too little for it. We may do something similar this time. Though, we will be having dh take them out to dinner that night just them while my parents visit and meet the new baby so they won't feel so left out.
  • Were planning on getting our daughter a bike. The bike she has now (14inch) is becomming too small for her, so we're going to upgrade her to a 20 inch bike when the baby comes. We plan on telling her that now that she is a big sister, she needs a big girl bike, or something along those lines. I also plan on her having a special Big sister shirt to wear when she comes to the hospital.
  • We have our older kids make their soon to be born sibling a Build A Bear as a way of bonding. The older ones feel important picking out the bear and stuffing it. They each get to put in a little heart too which they think is special because they each make a wish on it. As for older sibling gifts, they get a goody bag for while we are at the hospital- new crayons, coloring book, a few of their favorite snacks, etc. maybe even a new movie to watch to keep them occupied.
  • I wish we had a build a bear in Nebraska but we don't :( that would be perfect! She has about 12 baby dolls and all the accessories. The crib, baby carrier, car seat, high chair, swing, diaper bag. She is baby obsessed. She breaks and destroys jewelry lol. So that's a definite no! I want to get her a big sister book. Any recommendations?

We are getting DD a kitty surprise, which is a plush cat that has kittens.  You don't know how many kittens you get until they come out of the mommy's belly.  They also make a puppy surprise.

Wow I didn't know they still made these! I loved those when I was a kid.

  • We were going to get DD a new packpack with various bits and activities she can do when visiting in the hospital? Shes getting really excited already and keeps listing off the things shes going to teach him to do :3 xx
  • I was thinking more busy activities while visiting. She just gets bored coloring and crafting so fast. I saw a few things on Pinterest but I'm still at a loss. I know it's 11 weeks away but I don't want to wait until last minute, like I do everything lol. I know I want to treat her to a "girls day". Take her to get her nails and toes painted before hand. She is obsessed with having her nails done. But as far as the gift for the day she meets her baby sister, I'm lost lol.
  • I may copy the truck idea. The girls seem pretty easy but I couldn't think of a 3.5 yr boy gift from his little sister. Our son is so excited about the baby but I can't think of ways to involve him...besides him spitting on the belly. I think some call it giving raspberries? It ends up as spit but makes him happy.

  • I liked the idea someone had of a bag with big brother/sister shirt, book, camera for them to take pictures & photo album. Still looking for my son who will be almost 4, boys are tougher I think.
  • DS has a very special stuffy- it's a beaver he's had since he was 1. He packs that thing everywhere. It has been literally everywhere DS has been for 4 years. He wants his brother to have one too. New baby will be gifting a new beaver( the closest approximation we could find of the original) and a big brother book when DS comes to the hospital. DS will care for the new beav until he decides Felix is old enough.

I also loved this as a kid. My son actually asked for this for Christmas & I was bummed they come in such girly, glittery girl colors & not real dog colors!
  • The kid camera is a great idea! I've seen them and she loves to take pictures! Her aunt is a photographer, so she thinks she is too lol. I know fisher price makes them. Where do you get kid safe photo albums though? I've never seen any.
  • I love this idea! My SS will be almost 9 when baby is born. He's older but I still think I would be fun to get him something from his little bro :)
Any suggestions for an older sibling?

  • I'm planning on getting my dd a "big sister" charm and chain from James Avery.
  • Our boys will be 7 and 8 when LO gets here, so we aren't sure what to get for them. Though it's not a gift, I fully intend to take framed photos of the boys with us to have in my room. I want them to know that they are still my baby boys (ok, not babies) and that just because LO is here, that doesn't make them any less special or important in our lives.
I may ask them directly if there's anything special they'd like to celebrate becoming big brothers. Who knows, they may think I'm weird for wanting them to get something.
  • I am working on big brother gift ideas now! So far I've nailed down a sleeping bag with his favorite characters on it (Airplanes) since he will be sleeping over at my in laws while I'm in the hospital. We also got a "big brother" sweatshirt for him to wear when he comes to meet the new baby. Still brainstorming a few
    More ideas now...
  • Parker is getting a new spiderman backpack that is filled with some activities for him to do while he is visiting us at the hospital, coloring/activity books, crayons, matchbox cars. He also is getting a Big Brother Photo album that has a couple family pictures, and ultrasound and then the rest will be filled with pictures of him and his new baby brother.

But hey why not I love a excuse To give gifts to People ..
  • My daughter is 3 and I knew I wanted to do something for her but wasn't sure exactly what so I am glad you posted this!  Great ideas here!  I would also be interested to know where to get a toddler friendly album.  I think I am leaning towards a back pack of things for her to do at the hospital, a camera and if I can find the toddler friendly album.

  • My little brother was born when I was 7, and I remember receiving a very nice book of fairy tales from him. I loved it. I plan to have this baby girl do something similar for her big brother and sister. <3
