Breastfeeding

weaning cold turkey

Hi all, I decided to wean my 11 month old cold turkey.  She has been taking a sippy cup fine, and we have a vacation coming up (no kids), so I wanted to wean.  This is my 2nd baby, so the 2nd time weaning cold turkey for me.  But now that I look back on it, I think I was a little more gradual the first time I weaned.  This time I went pretty cold turkey.  It has been 3 days now, and I am pretty engorged.  I have been taking sudafed, putting cabbage leaves on my breasts, and take 2-3 hot showers a day and squeeze a little milk out with out stimulating my nipples so I don't let down.  Any other advice?  And yes, I know going cold turkey wasn't the smartest path, I now realize that.  I just figured it worked well for me the first time, but I don't remember it being this bad.

Re: weaning cold turkey

  • you can take sudafed to help dry up. also advil for pain and inflammation.

sage is also supposed to be good for reducing milk supply. you can brew a few sprinkles of the dried herb like tea, or just add it to other foods.

  • theresat858 , I have been squeezing a lot out during showers to give myself some relief.  Also, I remember this happening with my son when I weaned, I was so engorged and after a week my boobs never shrank, they were still full of milk, so I had to discard the milk somehow, so I went in the shower and squeezed everything out.  I am hoping that squeezing all the milk out vs pumping will keep me from letting down, and hoping my body won't keep replenishing.  I keep trying to google this and can't find an answer.  Does this make sense?
