Any dancing mommies out there?

I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant with my first. I have been dancing off and on for many several years (ballet, modern, jazz, and some gymnastics). I was just wondering how others have coped with 1) how much to "chill out" on workouts or hours of dancing. 2) how are you dealing with the changes in your body and the regression of ability?

PS: I was also been in treatment for quite a while to get a handle on my eating disorder, so I understand I may be obsessing a little at times about body changes.

Re: Any dancing mommies out there?

  • With my DD, I had been dancing for 13 years (Tap, Jazz, Ballet). I had several classes, several times a week. It was exhausting, but it kept me very healthy. I ended up having to stop at seven months. I wish I would have kept with it, but my body just couldn't handle it anymore. So I guess my advice to you is, just listen to your body. If your body is telling you to slow it down, then slow it down. Don't push yourself.

  • I'm not a dancer but I have been a long time swimmer and yogi. With my DS I was so sick and exhausted the thought of exercise was daunting. I did as much as I could but on days it was impossible I just had to remind you self that was the babies way of saying he needed as much from me as possible. Listen to your body.
As for your eating disorder I can relate. I have alot of body image issues and even this time in my 2nd pregnancy I am anxious to get back to a more active routine and drop the weight, but all in due time. The healthier you eat in proper amounts the more dancing you can do, keep that as your motivation (as I am sure you feel motivated by baby). It's hard to go easy on your self but when you see your sweet babies face for the first time you really begin to realize how unimportant obsessing over body image is. Good luck!
  • I was a ballroom dancer and coached gymnastics when I was pregnant with my first. I had to stop at about 30 weeks because my body just couldn't take it anymore, and I probably should have stopped sooner. DD was born shortly after I stopped.

  • Thank you for the responses. :) it's helpful to hear that I'm not the only one finding that energy is not as plentiful any more. I will surly try to listen to my body as well as possible and not my crazy "omg your getting fat" thoughts. lol. Also, @Whootie‌, I was surprised how much my focus shifted when I saw the first ultrasound of the baby! In that moment, I forgot all about the number on the scale. Hopefully I can keep focusing on the beautiful reason I'm transforming into a less desirable figure. :)

@willowprincess‌ I hope to continue to dance as long as possible (at least at normal classes) but I'm afraid the performing will have to take a break... My waist is officially nonexistent, and with ballet your "lines" are very necessary. (As I'm sure you know @cnoelle92‌) sad but true.
