High-Risk Pregnancy

Incompetent cervix and bed rest

Hello all- I am new to this site and am currently 35 years old and 18 weeks pregnant . 2 days ago, my ob gyn said my cervix felt too short and the baby felt very low (I had also been feeling some pressure above the pelvic area for a few days that felt unusual). The next day, I went in to see my perinatal specialist and he did a cervical length ultrasound- the results were 1.3 cervix with funneling, and when pressed on area, cervix down to 0.8 . I immediately saw my ob after and he performed a cerclage for me that night. Now I'm wondering for people who have had similar experiences- what did "bed rest" consist of? The dr didn't say strict, but I am so overly cautious that I am going to commit to bed rest for the duration. I am worried about a few things, though. I am normally very active so I'm wondering how to stay healthy while being sedentary? I am paranoid about blood clots and possibly gestational diabetes from inactivity ( I am naive about it so not sure if that's a cause). Also, just wondering how successful cerclages have been for other women, and the longest they made it to! My cervix seemed so short so fast, it freaked me out! P.s. I did have prior cervical procedures done, so guessing those were a factor in all this.

  • Forgot to mention- I am now on antiobotics for a week, nipedipine for prevention of contractions, and will be starting progesterone suppositories in a few days.

  • Hello! Welcome to bed rest, my story is similar. I was diagnosed with IC on November 19th, cerclage placed the next day, and on bed rest since. Dr said bed rest is strict meaning no standing no cooking no cleaning and short baths. I'm currently 25w 6 days an my cervix has actually gotten stronger; the funneling is starting to close. I started progesterone suppositories immediately after surgery an I will tell you do not be alarmed by the discharge. I went to labor an delivery because I thought I was losing my mucus plug. Just know that it's nothing to be worried about. It's just discharge.
  • Thank you! It will be a journey, but hopefully a long and healthy one. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!
  • Have a schedule! I was on bedrest for 5 mo. At 4 months my cervix was .5cm and I went in for an emergency cerclage. It was fun for the first 2 weeks of bedrest, but after that I was miserable until I figured out a schedule. Wake up, eat, do things if you can sitting up (computer, arts and crafts whatever). Take a nap. Lunch. Etc.

My cerclage was taken out at 30 weeks and then my daughter never dropped. Go figure. I had a csection at 38 weeks. Everything was fantastic.

I'm pregnant again and will have my cerclage placed next week at 10 weeks. It's preventative and said no bedrest! Yay.
  • I'm 37 and this is my rainbow baby after losing the first at 9wks due to fibroids. I'm currently 34+5 and waiting to have my cerclague removed at 37wks. I went in for my cerclague the same day as my 19 wk ultrasound when it was discovered that my cervix had shortened to 2. I've been on modified bedrest and niphedrine 10, and later 20, ever since. Looking forward to ditching the stitch! Things looked bleak but I've made it this far! So keep your head and hopes up. No matter how you feel, get comfortable and stay rested as much as you can for baby - nothing else is more important. Also drink as much water as you can possibly hold. I had a few scares due to dehydration. So settle in and hold out - as long as you take care of yourself that stitch will hold :)
