  • @DCKate - let me get this straight.  CPS kids in CHICAGO of all places don't have winter clothes?  That's bullshit.  I live in California but I'm willing to scrap together funds to buy some midwest kids freaking gloves.  What is wrong with our country?

It was so heart breaking. A lot of those kids also have breakfast and lunch at school, so teachers worry that they won't eat on snow days either.

I will second @ohiodoxiemama08‌ about having a warm house. It is 0 degrees today with with wind chill that is....not even a real number.

On our NPR station today, they were talking to the Chicago superintendent of schools on how they make the decision to close schools. One of the major factors? A majority of kids in CPS don't have winter boots, gloves, etc and it wouldn't be safe for them to walk to school.

I just spent $30 on Frozen headphones for our trip tomorrow without batting an eye. We are very lucky.

I work in a school in the suburbs of Chicago and unfortunately I see this with a lot of my kids. Thankfully we get some donations from organizations, but many of our students do not have appropriate clothing or outerwear for this weather. Many of our students also have to walk to school because their parents work early or the family cannot afford a car.

  • I was in a huge multi car pileup on a freezing Minnesota freeway today.  A semi swung in front of me so I swerved off the road, down a large hill and into a tree.  My car might be totaled and I am super sore.  But driving through the wrecks in the towtruck showed me seven semis that needed towing and cars that were in far worse shape than mine.

I am so thankful. I am thankful I chose to ditch it rather than chance it hitting the semi.  I am thankful that the impact wasn't as hard as it could have been and that I had my seatbelt on.  And most of all I am so so thankful that DD was safe at home with daddy.  It put so much in perspective.  I got home and just wanted to hug them both. Oh and that my DH took the call without any anger or condescension.

  • @spainy17‌ glad you weren't hurt! I saw lots of accidents involving semi's on the news tonight (the weather is crazy right now). MH drives an hour each way to work and it took him 2.5 to get home tonight. I pray every night he makes it home safely when the weather is terrible.

  • Yeah I live in western Wisconsin, was driving to a doc appoitment and thankfully DH came home to watch DD or she would have been with me!  The roads were awful and once i saw how long the chain reaction of accidents was I realized how much worse it could have been for me!

The crappy thing is that I have to work all weekend so I had to drive a rental car even farther down the same stretch of road (made it here safe) this morning and will have to do the same all weekend long!  I thought I was going to die every time a semi went by, ahhh!

  • @spainy17 Oh my gosh, so happy you are ok! That's so scary! There have been a lot of big accidents like that this year with the weather (I'm in southeast PA). I hope you are less sore today!
