Summer baby specifics

What things are helpful to know if you've had a previous baby during the summer?

My daughter was a January baby so it was a bundle up scenario 24/7.

As I'm thinking for the summer though- do you put a summer baby in just a shirtsleeve onesie around the house since they will be swaddled anyways or do you use the full body jammies when at home? I don't want the baby to be too warm but I feel like exposed legs are not ideal for a brand new baby?

With my first two I kept them in sleepers all the time - especially when they still had their umbilical cord stump because you don't want anything at the waist. I'm a big fan of air conditioning so while it was hot outside it wasn't inside and I wanted them to be warm.

My DS was born in May. It was about 80 here. But in the house with the AC on I normally had him in lightweight clothes and swaddled. Then when he was a bit older we went to onesies with pants. If we went outside though he was normally just in a onesie.

Agreed Eda0526 suggested- I would probably do a sleeper just as light of one as possible and a super light swaddle.

We used the a/c enough that light sleepers were perfect. On some warmer days or if we turned up the temperature I would do onesie, socks and baby legs. For outside it was onesie, socks, maybe soft leggings and a big sun hat. I didn't have them for my summer baby, ironically I got them for my November DD, but aden and anais blankets would have been perfect for summer outings.

If you swaddle (DD 1 hated it, DD 2 LOVED it), then I would probably do a onesie and the swaddle depending on the temperature of your house. Being cooler is safer than being too warm and if I remember correctly baby is one more light layer than you need.

My DS was born in July. We did onesies during the day and swaddled at night. I'm in agreement that baby will be comfortable in what you would be comfortable in.

I'm moving back to Australia and our baby of just going to live in a nappy (diaper) and a singlet. She will mostly be a happy little naked baby just like her Mumma was

DD was born in July, we swaddled at night and she wore a long sleeve onsie. During the day she wore dresses, onsie outfits etc.

For the winter I know we'll have to give in for sure because right now we don't run our heat unless it his 55 inside. It usually sits at 66-68.

I swear this is what I stressed about most with my kids when they were born. I would lose sleep being nervous if they were too hot or cold! We had to just try a variety of scenarios...sleepers with sleepsacks, sleepers alone, the fleece sleepers (got way too hot for my kids), onesies with footed pants. We tried it all!

I am making sure I have a sun screen for the car, and also a lot of cotton sleepers (opposed to fleece) and cotton swaddlers. I also was told baby leggings are great for summer, because you can dress the baby for warm weather outside, then slip on the baby leggings for inside, so I bought 5 of those.

A fan in baby's room is actually a SIDS reducer. My youngest foster child was born in June. We always ran the fan and she slept in a onesie and lightweight sleepsack.

I had two summer babies and they were totally different. My first ran hot and would wake up sweaty if I had in her in anything more than a diaper or mayyyyybe a short-sleeved onesie on under her swaddler. I put her in nothing short-sleeved onesies or sometimes just a diaper all summer. She'd get especially overheated if she fell asleep on me during the day. People (especially old ladies) were always telling me she was underdressed, but my pedi confirmed that, like real people (imagine that!), some babies run hotter and colder than other babies.

As if to prove the point, my second DD, also born in the summer, ran much colder and only slept well if her arms and legs were covered. I thought I had enough baby girl clothes to choke a horse, but I went out and bought an armful of sleepers for DD2 because all I had were onesies!

ETA: So my actual advice is not to buy anything ahead of time except for some very basic onesies and sleepers in newborn size and the next size up. Buy or have a family member buy for you whatever you need later based on your baby's actual needs. There are so many variables besides hot/cold; you might end up having a baby too big for NB sizes, or, like me, you might end up with a baby in NB size for several weeks with nothing to wear because everyone said they are in NB size for like a day.

the nurse told me baby should wear a layer more than mom. so if I was in a tshirt, baby was in a longsleeve and I usually had a tshirt onesie underneath as well or swaddled.

BUBBLE ROMPERS!!! That's what they're called!!! Thank you! I've been looking all over for these but didn't know how to search bc I didn't know the name.

This is true, but I want to point out that it's only for the first week or two. A lot of people are told this in the hospital (and it's true at the time!) but don't realize how temporary it is and don't change how they dress their babies as they become better able to keep themselves warm.

I think you should be prepared for anything. My daughter was born in July, when it's usually in the 80's but she had a problem keeping her body temp up and I had to dress her in pants, socks, long sleeves, and hats for the entire first month. I'm not saying that's normal but it can happen!

With my first, the dr said to add 1 layer more than what you are wearing, for babies just a month or two old.

We don't have air conditioning, so often my August born baby was just in a diaper in the middle of the day.
