What Supplements Do You Take?

I'm considering Pre- and Pro-biotics...does anyone do this?

What I do now:

- Omega-3s
- Prenatal (to replace Multi-vitamin) with DHA
- Zinc
- B Complex
- Iron

I was thinking about adding the biotics...and I'm curious about Vitamin D3. These things have been mentioned to me in helping with depression and what not, so I was thinking of giving them a try. My doctor knows what I'm on now, but not the proposed additions, and I'd ask her before going forward, but I was just curious what everyone else takes and if anyone actually does the biotics or Vitamin D.

I take probiotics, D, B complex, krill oil, and magnesium in addition to my multivitamin, which is formulated for diabetics so it has some extra stuff in it. I haven't noticed that any of these help my depression, but I was feeling pretty good when I started taking them. However, they were definitely no match for my PPD.

ETA: The only things that reliably make a dent in my depresion are prescription drugs and intense exercise.

  • I do potassium because of the lasix and when I was in the hospital they tested my levels and it came up low.  I don't do probiotics but we do them for the twins and it has done wonders for their digestion/reflux issues.

  • Prenatal + DHA, D3 (for the same reason as @crawford411‌ posted, can't remember to ever give DS his gross vitamins), B-complex, and biotin. I've been considering probiotics also.

  • I take my prenatal and I'm going to be adding 4,000 IU of Vit D starting today. Pretty much everyone in the midwest is deficient this time of year (especially people of color) and I can't ever remember to give Sunny the drops.  I figure I'll supplement myself instead with my nightly pills and see if that makes a difference.

In the vast majority of cases, supplementing D3 is perfectly safe. It has been shown to help with depression as well in those who are deficient.  You can give it  try for sure, but I would ask your doc about dosage.
I clicked "quote" and then realized nevermind, because I was going to ask about dosage. Saaaaad tromboooooone. But yeah, I know a lot of people who have been experimenting with this. But always under a doctor's care, because too much can be a bad thing (right?).

Biotin is THE SHIT. I should add that back in, since I want my hair to grow faster. The combo of prenatals plus biotin should make it a double-whammy.

    I am taking:
    Prenatals with DHA
    Calcium chews
    Iron
B12 injections (I am very deficient)
50,000 IU - Vit D ( 90% sure this is accurate) - Again very deficient

I can't say the Vitamin D is helping.... but maybe things would be worse without it?

  • Prenatals
    Vitamin C
    Probiotics (15 million)
Soy lecithin for prevention of clogged ducts
Glucosamine chondroitin now that I'm running again

Now that my supply has mostly regulated I'm planning on stopping the soy lecithin once I finish the bottle.

You guys have me nervous that I should be taking vitamin D now. The pedi never said anything about drops for LO.

It totally does, and I forget what I used to take. 5,000 mcg? I think?

PSA: I order all my shit from vitacost. It's cheaper, ebates gives you 8% cash back, and there are always coupon codes. I literally order a year's worth of everything at a time. I get Dr. Bronner's soaps/shaving gels there, Mrs. Meyers household products, Emergen-C, all my supplements.

So. Check them out. I've never been disappointed. Like, for instance, Emergen-C at Kroger here is like $13. It's $8 or so on Vitacost. When you are buying 10-12 boxes, it adds up. Same for Mrs. Meyers and Bronner's. Burt's Bees stuff is also way cheaper.

Ebates is fucking amazing. Especially if you shop online. You just click the link through THEM, and they give you cash back on purchases. So, like, if I spent $100 somewhere, and that store had an 8% cashback thing going on, they'd deposit $8 into my account. They pay it out via check or paypal 4 times a year. I mean, I literally shop for EVERYTHING online. If I could shop for groceries, I would. So, it's huge for me.

  • So my ob just gave a list of shit I should be taking as follows:

    woman's multivitamin/mineral

    EPS/DHA

    D3 Liquid

MetaGlycemX (because I'm naturally too sweet)

    Mag Citrate (magnesium and calcium)

PGX (another blood sugar aid suppose to help with cravings)

    Probiatic

I guess I am off the gummy vitamins now :(

  • For some reason Biotin never did shit for my hair but prenatals are awesome for mine. (I took them way before getting preg that's how I know it was the vitamins)

  • I take a women's multi and am finishing my bottle of iron (anemia in pregnancy and then from c-section).

I'm not a big proponent of supplements as most haven't been shown to do much unless you are deficient. You can take too much fat-soluble vitamins (ADEK) and they accumulate. Water soluble B and C excess will most likely go out with your pee. So all that extra vitamin C in Emergen-C can basically be flushed down the toilet and skip the step where you take it. Even calcium supplementation hasn't been found to be very helpful for osteoporosis prevention.  Excess supplementation of calcium may even be harmful. Dietary calcium and weigh-bearing exercise are better. The literature is so confusing on this, it's hard to say what is true. The evidence for omega-3s isn't that great either. You can't just take on a fish oil capsule to an otherwise high saturated fat diet and expect heart protection. It's probably the overall diet of people who eat fish diets that makes the difference, not just the fish oil they consume.

I usually tell patients that most supplements are not likely to harm more than your pocketbook. There are some exceptions though - some supplements are toxic and some can interact with other meds.  I have seen 1 case of chronic vitamin d overdose that led to symptomatic high calcium, so not common at all but it can happen. If supplements make you happy, take them but most of them probably don't help much and some of that shit is expensive!

I'm actually wondering if I even need to take Omegas, because we eat fish 2-3 times a week as it is...Hmmm.
