I'm considering Pre- and Pro-biotics...does anyone do this?
What I do now:
- Omega-3s
- Prenatal (to replace Multi-vitamin) with DHA
- Zinc
- B Complex
- Iron
I was thinking about adding the biotics...and I'm curious about Vitamin D3. These things have been mentioned to me in helping with depression and what not, so I was thinking of giving them a try. My doctor knows what I'm on now, but not the proposed additions, and I'd ask her before going forward, but I was just curious what everyone else takes and if anyone actually does the biotics or Vitamin D.
Re: What Supplements Do You Take?
ETA: The only things that reliably make a dent in my depresion are prescription drugs and intense exercise.

Vitamin C
Probiotics (15 million)
Soy lecithin for prevention of clogged ducts
Glucosamine chondroitin now that I'm running again
Now that my supply has mostly regulated I'm planning on stopping the soy lecithin once I finish the bottle.
You guys have me nervous that I should be taking vitamin D now. The pedi never said anything about drops for LO.

woman's multivitamin/mineral
EPS/DHA
D3 Liquid
MetaGlycemX (because I'm naturally too sweet)
Mag Citrate (magnesium and calcium)
PGX (another blood sugar aid suppose to help with cravings)
Probiatic
I guess I am off the gummy vitamins now
I'm not a big proponent of supplements as most haven't been shown to do much unless you are deficient. You can take too much fat-soluble vitamins (ADEK) and they accumulate. Water soluble B and C excess will most likely go out with your pee. So all that extra vitamin C in Emergen-C can basically be flushed down the toilet and skip the step where you take it. Even calcium supplementation hasn't been found to be very helpful for osteoporosis prevention. Excess supplementation of calcium may even be harmful. Dietary calcium and weigh-bearing exercise are better. The literature is so confusing on this, it's hard to say what is true. The evidence for omega-3s isn't that great either. You can't just take on a fish oil capsule to an otherwise high saturated fat diet and expect heart protection. It's probably the overall diet of people who eat fish diets that makes the difference, not just the fish oil they consume.
I usually tell patients that most supplements are not likely to harm more than your pocketbook. There are some exceptions though - some supplements are toxic and some can interact with other meds. I have seen 1 case of chronic vitamin d overdose that led to symptomatic high calcium, so not common at all but it can happen. If supplements make you happy, take them but most of them probably don't help much and some of that shit is expensive!
