Help with food and meds for stuffed nose!

So main thing is I have pretty bad rhinitis going on, my nose is completely stuffed on both sides and I can't really taste anything, which is killing my appetite. On top of that, the idea of meat and grains makes me sick, no chicken, pork, beef, pasta, bread. Rice seems to be ok (maybe because I'm Asian, lol). Only meat I want is fish and seafood, but since I'm limited to 12 oz per week, I go through that in a day. I've heard beans and nuts for protein? And eggs, I'm ok with eggs. All I want is fruit. Any other ideas for protein? Or ideas for what medicine to take for the nose? I've tried sudafed and a humidifier. Not helping much. I can't do nasal sprays or liquids (phobia from drowning as a kid). Thanks in advance!

  • This is pretty old fashioned but have you tried a hot rag? The steam might help alleviate the nasal pressure! Good luck, I had a nasty sinus infection and had to fly last week - was pretty sure I was dying from the intensity of the pressure, so I feel your pain :(.

  • I did actually. Along with boiling a pot of water and sticking my face in the steam multiple times. My nose and me and mortal enemies right now. I miss tasting food. :(

  • Try saline too.  Netti pot or saline spray.  I was completely stuffed last night and saline cleared it right up.

Try some hummus too.  It has a strong flavor so you may be able to taste it!  Hope you feel better!
Liquid in my nose send me into a panic attack. Almost drowned as a kid, took me years to be able to just wash my face without dying lol. Was wondering about the neti pot though. Does it give the same sensation of water up the nose? I've heard different things.

  • I swear by Olbas Oil. Just a blend of essential oils that cut through mucus and clear airways, so it's totally safe. You can rub it on your chest or put a few drops in hot water before inhaling the vapors. Last time I was pregnant I also put it in the Vick's hole on my humidifier.

You can buy it at natural medicine stores, earth fare, whole foods, etc. little bottle is $10 but will last several colds.

  • Keep doing the humidifier. Meds allowed by my doc are Mucinex D, Chlortrimeton, Tylenol Sinus, Benadryl, or Zyrtec (plain, not D). Also Sudafed and saliene nasal spray, which you've X'ed/tried.

  • @quietdownfiish might have to try it, I know my mom swears by it.

@Carolinagirl2014 I'll look into it, thanks! Trying my best to go the nonmedicine route as much as possible.

  • Mine got so bad that I went to an ENT and they gave me my one shot of Afrin. Then prescribed nasal budesonide which has been far less traumatic than the neti pot (I completely relate on the getting fluid up the nose ). The best thing otherwise was for me to take a bite of mochi and let it melt in the back of my mouth. It relieved the swelling that prevented air from coming through. You get protein, calcium, rice, and lots of sugar that way, lol! I hope you feel better soon!
