Going Home outfit- size??

OK. So I don't plan on going all crazy overboard on the going home outfit. I know to get something comfy, warm and easy for the baby to go home in.  But I'm a ftm and I really want something cute with his name monogramed on it for pictures!! Anyway, I'm wondering what size I should get??? I keep hearing ppl say that their kid skipped newborn altogether.  But I've also been told 0-3months isn't really 0.  Experienced mamas, what size do I buy the going home outfit in??

  • i'm the same as @aggiebug - we'll be taking a NB and a 0-3 mo size with us. With DD, she was in NB for almost 7 weeks, but I know there are some babies who skip it all together. You simply won't know until after the delivery.
  • I got one of each and left the tags on the NB outfit. As of now, she will likely be small enough for the NB outfit though. But I also didn't really get anything cutesy or anything- just two cute sleepers from Carter's. I personally wouldn't get anything monogrammed in NB size in case your baby is too big for it.

  • Yea, now that I'm really thinking about it, ya'll are probably right getting something monogrammed in nb size probably isn't the best idea.  I may just find something cute in both sizes and (leave the tags on as suggested). I could get his name on one of the cute little hats since those will probably stretch more to fit.

  • I agree with PPs. I packed a nb and a 0-3 outfit. All brands are run differently just like our clothes.

  • NB and 0-3.  Also know that brands run differently.  Gerber is notoriously small.  You could always do a monogrammed hat in a stretchy fabric.

DS came home in a NB outfit. I did however also bring the next size up. This go around MIL has knitted an outfit, fingers crossed it fits!

  • I'll take one nb outfit and one 0-3 outfit. I get monogrammed hats because they're easy to store and are pretty much one size.

  • I do the same as everyone else has said. I pack a NB outfit and a 0-3.
  • I packed a nb, a 0-3, and a 3 mo. Those nb's look so tiny to me!!!!
  • I packed a NB and 0-3 sleeper.  DS was swimming in his NB outfit when we brought him home, he was in NB clothes for probably 6 weeks.  My niece skipped NB altogether and went right to 0-3.  It really depends on the baby and there's no real way to know in advance.

  • With my first daughter, we brought a 0-3 mo size and she was swimming in it. We should've brought a preemie because she was so tiny. I think your safest best is a NB size but it's really no guarantee.

  • For DD we took a nb and 0-3. We had to go buy a couple preemie outfits because the nb swallowed her even though she was 6lbs 12oz at discharge.
This time I'm bringing all 3 sizes just in case.

  • I have always packed one nb outfit and one 0-3 just to be safe! I was shocked when my last baby was born weighing 10lbs 5oz & still actually fit into the nb outfit i packed!
  • My dd was in newborn for a long time because she was so tiny. I found this chart helpful. It won't help for the bring home outfit but it will when picking other clothes.
  • We will bring only NB like last time. DD was 7 lbs this one will probay be around the same.

  • I've packed a NB and a 0-3 month. I'd rather be prepared with 2 sizes then take one and him not fit. Good luck!
  • Bringing a nb outfit and preemie, but Ds was 6lb the day he was released and swimming in the nb outfit I had bought

  • I'm in the process of washing baby girl's clothes now so once they are done I will choose a 0-3 month size outfit. I already have a nb one picked out. I'm thinking she won't be too big so hopefully she will be able to wear nb for a little while.
  • I brought a newborn size when my son was born. Then when he was born he was 8lbs and 8oz and I panicked thinking he would never fit newborn. Turns out he wore newborn for almost 2.5 months.
Totally depends on the kid. My sisters daughter was 7lbs but barely wore newborn at all.

  • I'm packing some NB and some 0-3 sleepers. I left the tags on the NB clothes and put the receipt in the leg, so I get my full refund if they are too small. My son was swimming in his NB when we brought him home, so I'm hoping that she will fit as well.

  • Stupid question: for people leaving the tags on, how will you wash it before the baby wears it home? Or am I over thinking things? I am a dummy and washed all the clothes regardless of size because I didn't want to be washing baby clothes while trying to figure out everything else. So I'm SOL if she's bigger than NB (altho I also have way more 0-3 mo so it's not too bad). Maybe I jumped the gun on washing her clothes.

FTM myself, but I washed all my daughter's clothes as well. I *am* anticipating her being on the bigger side, so we returned quite a few NB size outfits and got bigger stuff instead. Once that was done I figured we had a good spread of clothes up to 6mo so I went ahead and washed everything. At the very worst we won't be able to use the NB size and just end up storing them earlier than anticipated.

  • @loriann091‌ I washed about 3 NB and 0-3 month's ahead of time! I figure I'll be washing baby clothes in the day's after coming home so I'll wash more of the size that fits him and return what doesn't!
  • My answer is a little different because I won't go to term. I have a preemie outfit (4-6 lbs) and a newborn outfit in my hospital bag. If I was going to term I would bring a 0-3 as well.
  • I washed all L's stuff. I would rather wash it and never use it (knowing I can't return it) over putting something on such sensitive skin (that I don't know what has been in contact with it).

  • Great tips ladies!! Thank you! And @cndupree15 thanks for the size chart!!

  • With DD she wore newborn for the first 8 weeks - current LO is measuring quite large so I'm just bringing 0-3. We're Team Green so I will have a girl outfit and a boy outfit in case.

  • Sizing can also vary by brand and style, just like grown up clothes :) PPs have had excellent advice.
  • For those of you in colder states, what exactly are you bringing? I'm seeing a lot of sleepers being mentioned here. Are you going to be layering up the little ones with onesies underneath and blanket for the car ride to home? Just figured if i'm gonna be in 3 layers, shouldn't my baby be the same? FTM here and still undecided on what to bring.

I live in Missouri, so it's not a super cold state but we do have cold winters. I had my 1st daughter in early march and it was cold. Being a FTM I wanted her to be warm so I put socks and a onsie on under her sleeper. When the nurses came in to do her vitals, they kinda ripped me for it. They said all she needed was a sleeper and layering could cause her to overheat. I just didn't know any better. Since then all I've ever used was just a sleeper and a blanket over them if we were in the car.
  • I have a fleece zip up onesie I was going to use but now im not sure. I will def have blankets and ask the nurses what they think. I didnt realize until a previous post about not having too many layers between baby and car seat straps. (duh)
  • My DS was a pretty big baby - something like 8 lbs 14 oz - but he was still in NB for a while. I plan to just bring NB for DD. I hope I don't regret it!

I didn't get ripped, but at the hospital tour the nurse told me a hat, outfit/sleeper, socks/booties (if footless), and one blanket for the car. I bought a long sleeve gown to take my girls home in. The car will be warm in advance.

Size 0-3 and size 3-6 just to be safe be I live in Texas where one minute its hot next its cold. Most likely baby will be under a lot of blankets. So I got something simple.
