3rd Trimester

how much weight did you gain each trimester?

Hi. I understand if no one wants to answer---but I just want to know what to expect. I am only 17 weeks-- I have gained 5 pounds... 3 the first trimester and none the 2nd till a few days ago ..so 2 pounds out of no where! I am scared this is a start of a rapid weight gain.

So I was just wondering, if you feel comfortable telling, how much weight did you gain by trimester and/or when did you have rapid weight gain or ever?
I know I shouldn't be too concern about this, but it is always in the back of my mind!!

Wish you all a great rest of your pregnancy! :)

  • Definitely talk to your doctor, but I am 37.5 weeks now, and my curve is the same shape as these and similar to B or C. Don't stress out about it too much. There may be some weeks when you gain a lot and some weeks where you don't gain as much, but it evens out (or at least it has for me).

  • I am having twins, first trimester I gained 10 lbs, 11 lbs the second , 2 lbs this third trimester so far.
    Me: 32, DH: 34.
Trying since Jan 2011. Unexplained IF.
    2 IUIs = BFN.
    1 IVF (Dec 2013) = BFN.
    FET, 2 frosties (June 13, 2014)

    14dp5dt-June 27 -BFP, beta 2061. 2nd beta >5000, 3rd beta >5000, 2 sacs 06/30.
Twin Girls - 02/11/15 - at 37 weeks (no NICU, home with me at 3 days).
  • I'm having a singleton and didn't gain too much in the first trimester and didn't gain much in the second. Maybe 13lbs between the two? Then, when I hit the third trimester, I ended up gaining 17lbs pretty quickly, which seems to have tapered off now.

  • I actually lost 10 lbs in my first trimester as I was eating very healthy and working out lots (I didn't know I was pregnant until 17 weeks). I went to Europe and the whole eating insanely healthy went out the door during/after that... I gained about 15 lbs in my 2nd trimester and have since gained 12 lbs in my third. I'm currently 38 weeks. I'm technically only up 17 from pre-pregnancy which I'm happy about. As pp's have said.. Some weeks I gained nothing and some I gained a lot. I wouldn't track it too carefully or stress about it. It all averages out. My dr said it has a lot to do with baby's growth spurts too. I actually gained the least weight over the weeks of Halloween and Christmas (when I admittedly, was eating like total crap). There's no rhym or reason to it.

I was advised to stay between 10-15 pounds. Talk to your doctor about what an accurate weight gain number should be for your height and weight. Then remember if your doc isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either.

  • Each pregnancy is going to be different so it's really based on you, the baby, your lifestyle/eating habits, and what your doctor thinks would be a good range. For me, I lost lbs as consistently as I was "gaining" so my weight stayed the same for the first 27 weeks. Now I'm just about 30 weeks and finally weigh two lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight. But again, everyone is different and it's ultimately about being healthy and getting the right kind of nutrients rather than eyeing the scale.
  • I gained about 4 lbs the first trimester. And 13 the second. I'm at week 30 now and am shooting to gain 13 lbs throughout my 3rd. I still run and eat healthy, so I'm feeling good about it!

I have put on about 18 lbs so far at 35 weeks, and started in the healthy weight range for my height. 10 of those lbs were in a 4 week span (20-24 weeks). I remember thinking "Oh my gosh, at this rate I will gain 40+ more lbs!!" but it doesn't work that way most of the time. It is healthy and expected to have a big growth spurt in the second trimester. This is when your uterus, blood volume, extra fluids, placenta, etc. all grow and add to the weight. Weight gain generally tapers off in the 3rd trimester since the only thing going on is the baby gaining weight (.5-1 lbs per week usually) and possibly some bloating. Your stomach is also squished and you feel full easier. This has been my experience. I lost 3 lbs in the first tri, Gained back those 3 plus 13 in the second, and so far in the 3rd trimester I have gained about 5 lbs. I have about 4-6 weeks left and expect to end up having gained about 25ish give or take.

Keep in mind that you are prone to bloat during pregnancy. I have days that I am a little swollen and will weigh at night and be 166, then the next morning I am 162. That is totally normal. Just don't worry about the number if you are eating right and exercising, your body will gain what it needs! I know people who eat perfectly and exercise and gain way more than the recommended amount during pregnancy because they are just designed that way. Women in my family tend to not gain much or swell much, so my weight gain is what I expected going in. We are all so different! Don't worry about it unless your doctor is concerned!

  • The first five months I lost 20 lbs (I did have some to lose) due to extreme nausea 24/7. I was eating bananas, nutrigrain bars, mashed potatoes and Greek yogurt. I was monitored by my doctor and she said I was doing fine and more importantly the baby was going great as well. As of today I am 37 weeks and I am still 2lbs under my pre pregnancy weight. I feel much better now and and can eat anything and I have been. Good luck ladies!
  • Lost 15 first tri, gained 6 so far in second tri (I'm 20 wks currently).
  • I actually lost 10lbs the first trimester and gained 15 in the 2nd. I have gained another 4 in the 3rd so far (29W 5d)
