XP: Anatomy Scan Results

I just wanted to see if anyone experienced anything similar during their pregnancies. My anatomy scan was mostly great. A few things showed up that require further testing....both the MFM dr and my Midwife said they really arent worried, they just have to investigate further. I on the other hand, am freaking out.

First , my Papp-a levels are lower than where they like to see. I dont know the number but everything im reading is scaring me. The good news is baby is huge and measuring a week and a half ahead , so I am hoping he stays that way, though I need to go for a growth ultrasound again in 3 weeks to make sure he is still growing ok (apparently this can be due to issues with the placenta/blood flow, tho none of that showed up on the A/S).
Second, there was 1 calcification on his liver. No where else, but I did a blood test for CMV to rule out a viral infection.
Third, they saw one marker on his heart. The tech missed it but the dr. saw it. All of my first trimester screenings came back perfect and all of his other measurements are perfect (eye sockets, nose , back of neck, movements, etc). THey did say while this increases our risk for chromosomal disorders its still very low (I was 1:58,0000, now thats cut in half).

I am so nervous as I await 1-2 weeks for the results of my blood test, and 3 weeks for my next ultrasound. Has anyone had experience with any of these 3 issues and everything turned out fine? The drs were trying to tell me usually one marker means nothing there would be multiple issues popping up, but somehow I cant get myself to feel better...

  • No experience, but I'm sorry you are dealing with this stress. FX that everything is okay!

  • @pinesnow the calcification was on his liver. The "spot" the dr saw was on his heart but I am not sure if thats also a calcium deposit or not. They keep saying if there was a real issue these things would come in multiples..but between those 2 and the low Papp-a, that sounds like multiple to me! Just have to wait for my blood work to come back and see, and then my growth scan in 3 weeks. UGH that sounds so far.
  • I am so sorry. DS had hydronephrosis detected at 20 weeks. Everything else looked fine but when I googled it, it showed as a soft marker for Downs Syndrome. Google can be scary, stay away and just wait until you get more information and then you can process the facts. By the way, after 1 year my son's hydronephrosis was non-existent and he was born healthy other than that.

I had low Papp-a levels with DS.  My OB said it was no biggie, they'd just keep an eye on my placenta as the pregnancy progressed.  t was so minor that my family doctor didn't even get a report of it from my OB.

Anyways, all that happened was that I got a few extra ultrasounds to make sure the placenta was still doing its job.  Towards the end I had non-stress tests and ultrasounds every couple of days, but that's because I didn't  deliver until 42 weeks, so they needed to be extra sure the placenta was still up to snuff.

Anyways, everything worked out fine!  Please try not to freak out too much, Mama.  you're doing a great job.

  • Just to give you some perspective, I and others in my mom loss group have had scans and learned that the baby would not live no matter what we did.  All in all, I would say your scan was great and to try and rest your mind (and search engine....no good comes of that).  Your baby will be a huge blessing to your family no matter what comes of these things...and it sounds like no one is worried on your medical team.  So truly, try not to worry either.  There are a thousand million what ifs in pregnancy and for now you have a happy and healthy baby in your belly.  Cherish this time and focus on that.  It is possible to have too much information and we can make ourselves crazy.  The PGAL mantra is "today I am pregnant and I love my baby".....but that should really be everyone's....it is so easy to worry I know.  Huge hugs mama, and stay off Google!  :)

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • Also, I meant that to be encouraging not "oh my stuff was worse than yours".....everyone's "stuff" is relative.  I just wanted to encourage you that I think everything sounds fine and not help you try not to worry.

  • Thank you for the perspective everyone.

@ally2011 you are right. Had I been 3/4/5 days removed from the appointment my head would have been more level im sure. But getting all of it thrown at you, with information you dont entirely understand and letters you have never heard before is scary. My midwife was much more encouraging than the dr at MFM. She was super nice, and didnt say anything bad, but she was giving facts...it could be nothing, it could be CMV which is deadly to a fetus. Who wants to hear that?? Thank you for the perspective. I like that mantra and I am sticking with it.
