RSV

My LO has been sick since Christmas, I took her to doctor day after Christmas and they said she had an ear infection and gave her amoxicillon. Things hadn't improved and daycare called today and said she started wheezing and they just found out another baby in her class had confirmed RSV.

I picked her up and took her right to the pediatrician, they confirmed she has RSV as well. They did saline and a nebulizer treatment. I was sent home with a script for a nebulizer and am supposed to do breathing treatments every 3-4 hours on her.

Anyone have any experience with RSV? I'm kinda freaked out and worried. Breaks my heart that she's not feeling well and I blame myself for sending her to daycare. She's pretty much been somewhat sock since she started mid November. Thanks in advance.

Re: RSV

  • At least your daycare is vigilant in listening for that kind of stuff! I feel like that counts for something, because if it went on a bit longer it could be worse, because they take good care of you girl, you got her started on treatment quickly :)

  • DS1 had RSV when he was an infant.  They did a chest xray and everything to rule out pneumonia (I was not there for that appointment and probably would have said no to the chest xray, DS had 0 symptoms of pneumonia).  Thankfully we avoided the nebulizer, but he was prescribed an albuterol  (sp?) inhaler.

DS kicked it pretty fast and we have thankfully have had little other concerns related to RSV.  He tends to get wheezy when he gets a cold, but we haven't had to use the albuterol in at least a year.  I was completely freaked at the beginning because popular literature, imho, makes RSV out to have serious, long reaching complications in every case.  DS' pediatrician calmed me down, thankfully.

My nephew also had RSV as an infant and did have to use a nebulizer.  He is 4-years now and has had a few other run-ins with the nebulizer as he also tends to get wheezy.

I think it is natural to get worried when our babies are sick.  Especially the little ones who cannot tell you what is wrong.  It sounds like you and your pediatrician have a care plan and a good relationship.  As my grandmother always said, this too shall pass.  I'll send some positive thoughts out to the cosmos for your LO.

Please don't blame yourself for sending your LO to daycare.  She could have picked up RSV anywhere, despite there being a confirmed case at your facility.  And even if she did pick up RSV at daycare, it does not mean you are doing something wrong.  You do what you have to do.  Kids whose parents SAH get sick too.

Hang in there and I hope your LO feels better soon!
  • Thanks everyone, I need the positive thoughts. Over the holiday when we went back home everyone was looking at me like I had 3 heads when I said we had her in daycare and I'm working full time. Really got me feeling quite guilty by the time we came back and then this happens! It's funny how no one asks my husband how he's handling daycare, such a double standard.
