Just wondering opinions on what you guys prefer or think should definitely be bought new versus consignment or craigslist. If this has been posted or there's a list somewhere I must have missed it!
Crib, bassinet, matresses, car seat, (these for saftey reasons), breast pump (unless you know the person), pacifiers/bottles/teething toys (again...unless you know the person)
I third the crib, bassinet and mattress. I wouldn't buy an infant car seat used either.
Not sure about the breast bump. I bought new, but I'm not sure how buying used would be that much different from renting. If you have all new pump parts (and you would), it shouldn't be a problem. I can see buying a hospital-grade pump used because they are extremely expensive new, and totally worth using over the non-hospital-grade pumps. If it's just a regular pump, I'd buy new. We are also buying all new bottles, nipples and any other feeding items.
As for swings, bouncers, strollers and the like, if you buy used, just be careful to check for safety issues. Make sure there haven't been any recalls of note.

@AmCheri rental pumps all have a closed system so there is no chance of contamination once the disposable parts are swapped out with new.
Most pumps you can buy at the store or get through insurance have the possibility of getting milk in the motor causing mold/cross contamination issues.

Oh no ! I was planning on getting mine through insurance..so these are not new? I should rent a hospital grade or buy new store grade?

Don't worry, the pump will be new. She was saying that if you buy one of those pumps used from someone, there is a possibility of contamination.

Yes, this exactly! If you can get your pump through your insurance, do it, and rest assured it will be new and safe to use!

I also wouldn't buy a crib, mattress, carseat, or pump used. On top of that I'd add anything that you can't effective wash & disinfect. So like a My Brest Friend pillow (milk could get down in the foam part, not just on the cover), stuffed animals, etc.
Just wondering why you wouldn't buy a used crib. We actually just bought all of baby's furniture yesterday secondhand from our dear friends whom we've known for a long time. The whole furniture set (crib which converts to toddler and queen, dresser, chest of drawers) is only three years old, has no recalls, is undamaged, and is solid wood. It's in great condition, especially for being three years old and being used by three babies. The only minor damage is that their first thought the front railing was a teething toy. But we will most likely be replacing that with a new rail from the company. And I plan to give the entire crib a good cleaning.
New items: carseats, mattress, bottles/pacis, pump, any toy that can't be fully washed.
I think you can find really nice crib used, it is just like buying any other baby/toddler item, check for safety issues and recalls.
Car seats, pacifiers, bottle nipples and pack n plays were my big ones with the twins. Cloth diapers, that's what bleach is for. If I could bleach it, I was ok with it used.
Still will not buy any of those used, and I'm not buying any vehicle without a TSP plus rating now.
For me - crib mattress, pacifiers and breast pumps are my main MUST BUY NEW.
I am lucky in I am getting a car seat (less than one year old) from my best friend and it is in perfect condition - no recalls - no stains - no nothing. The matching stroller system is coming with it too.
Personally for me, the crib and nursery gear will be new but that is because we have a specific model in mind.
Car seat, breast pump, and pack and play. I used to think a used pack and play would be ok till I did a hard core wash of mine (it was not used) the water in my bathtub from washing it was black!!!! Gross gross gross
I'm also curious why many of you wont buy a used crib. As long as it's recent, in good condition, and doesn't have any recalls, I wouldn't think there would be an issue. Mattresses are a different story, of course, and those I'd only buy new.
