Need some insight and reviews of Umass Memorial Hospital

I have a high risk pregnancy and am really terrified at delivering at this hospital. Compared to Brigham and women which is an hour away without traffic and Umass memorial can someone please give me some reviews of both places. Care received, doctors, nurses, cleanliness, updated equipment etc. thanks so much for your help

  • Not sure where you are located but I had my son (and plan to deliver this one as well) at Women and Infants inProvidence. They are amazing.

  • TL;DR: I personally think UMass runs a quality hospital system and would prefer to be near my care team and delivery hosptial.

    Long version:
I can't speak from direct experience delivering at either, but I do know that a lot of resources are put into UMass Memorial since it's the largest hospital system for quite a ways and because the State values having a highly rated public medical school. That carries through to having great physicians practicing at the hospital.

In the Boston area, there is definite need for hospitals to compete on amenities in L&D - I'm not sure if there's "competition" for L&D business in Worcester.

My preference (as a FTM) is to be reasonably close to my care team and the hospital I'll deliver at, and I would probably be more hesitant about longer travel times if I was considered high-risk. I don't know when you're due or where you're located, but travel in & out of Longwood can be a b*tch. My dad needed to be transferred to BIDMC from Metrowest Medical Center in Natick a few years back (and then transferred back for rehab care). Among concerns with timing the transfer were rush hour and the Red Sox schedule. Pretty nerve wracking in an emergency (which it was). If you're scheduling a cesarean or know you will be induced, you may be able to account for this, but if you're planning for sponteneous labor, this could be an issue.

One last thing that may not be relevent or an option in your situation - some people are more comfortable at non-teaching hospitals (in my case, Newton Wellesley) vs a teaching hosptial (B&W, UMass), since you won't encounter med students and residents while you're trying to push a baby out of your vagina. Especially true in the summer, since residents start in July.

  • I have a lot of friends who delivered at UMass, all positive experiences. I delivered at St Vincent's but I was not high risk. I too would choose a hospital close by.
