If you're doing solids, how much?

I know all babies are different.. yadda yadda...etc. BUT just to get an idea of what other LOs are eating and how much at this point:

What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?

How much are you giving LO?

Have you experienced any reactions?

What brand are you using or are you making your own?

Re: If you're doing solids, how much?

  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? We are doing purees. We did brown rice cereal for 2 weeks and then have done carrots and butternut squash, we do the veggies for 3-4days. I'm planning to do peas and then sweet potato and then try oatmeal and move to fruits.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule? We have a pretty good schedule which DD has created (she also has to take medicine 3x a day and have 8hrs between doses so it works out)

    7:30 - meds + 8oz bottle
    11:30 - veggies + 7oz bottle
    3:30 - meds + 7oz bottle
    7:30 - cereal + 8oz bottle
    11:30 - meds + 3-6oz bottle

I'm hoping once we see her doctor next week we will be able to cut out the extra dose of meds which will get rid of the last feeding.

How much are you giving LO? Right now we do 2 tablespoons of veggies and 2 teaspoons of cereal, and this is where I am so confused because I have no clue how much to give her? I don't want to overfeed her and I still want her main source of calories and nutrition to come from the formula so I'm not sure if this is enough or she needs more. She seems fine with it.

Have you experienced any reactions? No

What brand are you using or are you making your own? Right now we are using Plum Organics, the pouches that I squeeze out. I want to make my own after we have gone through and eliminated any potential reactions.

  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? We've tried sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, avocados, apples, pears, bananas and prunes. Going to try peaches, peas and carrots next. We are doing purees for now. I would like to transition to BLW eventually.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?
    7am Nurse
    8am 2oz fruit
    11am Nurse
    12pm 2oz fruit & 2oz veggie
    3pm Nurse
    4pm 2oz fruit & 2 oz veggie
    7pm Nurse

How much are you giving LO?
2 oz in the morning and 4oz for lunch and dinner. Sometimes he finishes it all and sometimes he doesn't. I just follow his lead. He's been nursing the same since we started.

    Have you experienced any reactions?
    None so far

What brand are you using or are you making your own? I've been making my own and on occasion will use the gerber organic brand.
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?
I am doing homemade purees and giving her either food that I eat whole that are soft (think rice) and letting her suck on pieces of protein (think a chunk of chicken)
I have a freezer full of purees in cube form I've already made: sweet potato, avocado, blueberry, yellow squash, green beans, nectarine, apple, and carrots.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?
I BF on demand (6-7 times a day) and feed her solids once a day.

How much are you giving LO?
3-4 oz average is 4 oz

    Have you experienced any reactions?
    No reactions yet.

What brand are you using or are you making your own?
    Making my own.

  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? Squash, carrots, peas, sweet potato, green beans, bananas, apples and peaches and oatmeal

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule? Once a day after 4pm feeding (usually at 5)

How much are you giving LO? 1/2 a container of the stage 1 Gerber

    Have you experienced any reactions?no

What brand are you using or are you making your own? Gerber
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, peas, apples, pears and bananas.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule? We just started a few weeks ago and were doing half a stage 1 Gerber veggie with rice mixed in at night. She's taken to it wonderful and I can't get the food in her mouth fast enough so I've started doing rice and half a stage 1 fruit at lunch time and a full container of veggies at dinner. Also nurses on demand.

    Have you experienced any reactions?
    Nope

What brand are you using or are you making your own? Gerber for now, I have all intentions of making my own but life keeps getting in the way haha

  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?
Oatmeal, sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, peas, carrots, and avocado. All pureed in my food processor.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?
I breastfeed on demand, about 7-8 times a day and give solids at lunch and dinner time. So little one gets the breast whenever he asks, a veg between 11 and noon, and oatmeal at 7pm, which is about an hour before bed. He'll be starting fruits at breakfast (probably about 8 am) in a few days.

How much are you giving LO?
As much or as little as he wants (with a three bite minimum). He eats about an ounce of most veg at a sitting, but will eat two or more oz of sweet potatoes -he loves it. He eats much more oatmeal (made with breastmilk), but I haven't measured it. I usually go through about 4oz of milk plus enough oatmeal to get it to the consistency I want.

    Have you experienced any reactions?
Not allergic reactions, but he definitely reacts when given a food that he doesn't like. Squash and avocado both make him gag (poor baby!) but I keep them in rotation to keep exposing him to the tastes. I won't make him eat more than a few bites of those though, if he doesn't want to.

What brand are you using or are you making your own?
    I make my own.
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?

    Oatmeal and purees

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?

In the AM we do oatmeal about an hour after she nursed. Then in the evening we do jarred baby food, again an hour after she nursed and close to bedtime.

How much are you giving LO?

Oatmeal: 1 Tbs with 3 Tbs BM. Purees: less than half a jar.

    Have you experienced any reactions?

    Nope

What brand are you using or are you making your own?

Natures Best and our store brand organic. We also have some Gerber and Beechnut. I plan to use mostly organic brands though.

What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? We just started about 5 nights ago with rice cereal.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule? We've been giving it around 6/6:30 when we have dinner. It's after her late afternoon feeding but before her bedtime one.

How much are you giving LO? So far, about a tablespoon of dry cereal mixed with about 1 oz of pumped milk. I'll start increasing the amount now that she's getting used to eating solids.

    Have you experienced any reactions?Nope.

What brand are you using or are you making your own? We use Earth's Best organic cereals. I received a Baby Bullet for Christmas and plan to start making some purees in it this weekend. I think I'll start with (organic) sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and peas.

    Edit: took out extra word
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?

We've just done peas so far. Green beans are next, and I bought some broccoli but now I'm not sure that's the best idea. Doing purres right now. (We just started last weekend) Our pedi suggested green veggies first, and then move to yellow and then orange.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?

Just once a day. I'll try a purée about an hour after I nurse her in the evenings after I get home from work. Once she figures out how to eat it then I'll start sending some with her to daycare.

How much are you giving LO? She barely eats anything, still figuring it out. I heat up one frozen ice cube size but she doesn't come close to finishing it.

    Have you experienced any reactions?

    Not, yet.

What brand are you using or are you making your own?

Making my own. I just steam the veggies and throw them in a blender with some breastmilk, dump them into an ice cube tray to freeze and then put the pucks in a zip lock freezer bag. I get almost an entire ice cube tray full for a $1-$5 depending on the type of veggie. I'm trying to buy organic when I can.

  • We are doing purees right now. DS2 has tried squash, carrots, green beans, peas and bananas.

Depending on how much solid food he gets in the morning, he may or may not get more in the evening. If it's fresh banana he gets about 2 tbsp and will take more food in the evening. If it's gerber baby food and he eats a whole container in one sitting, then no more solids in the evening. He also always has milk with any solid.

So far we have experienced no reactions.

  • I'm glad you've started this thread because I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing!

We are giving baby about half of the small stage one jars of Gerber organic purees at a sitting, but e are totally sporadic about it.  Sometimes we give him solids in the morning, sometimes the afternoon, sometimes both, some days none at all!

I've decided that my New Year's resolution is going to be to get the baby on a better schedule (daytime AND nighttime!!) instead of being all willy nilly.  Think I'm going to start a thread about it....

Same here. We have NO idea. I've always heard that babies should be 6 months before trying any kind of solid. We haven't given Spencer anything as of yet..still on formula only. He is satisified after each bottle. We have a dr appt coming up, so I will be asking then about starting solids.
  • For those of you with babies in daycare or any sort of child care...do you send solids along for them to try to give LO?  I haven't been sending any to DC because I have no idea how it works at DC.

With my boys, I waited until they were eating 2 solids meals a day before having DC feed them. I think we moved from 1-2 meals around 7 or 8 months -- adding breakfast then. I've always added "lunch" last, around 9-10 months.
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)?
Tried BLW with avocados, bananas, and sweet potatoes.  She didn't seem too coordinated.  She barfed up the avocado, so we gave up and went back to purees.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?
Uh.. 4 1/2 or closer to 5 months?

How much are you giving LO?
She gets a solid about once a day usually, sometimes two.

    Have you experienced any reactions?
No, unless you include the avocado barfs.  Sometimes she will take it and sometimes it's green slime shooting across my living room.

Make my own.  Get a tri crock pot.  3 different items at once.  Mash together if you want.  Whatevs.

  • I've been making my own purées. We've done carrots, green beans, and sweet potatoes, bananas, avocado, apples, and pears. Our schedule has been pretty solid for the past two weeks and she seems happy with it. I nurse at 5am and she goes back to bed until 8:30. Then I nurse at 9am and give 2oz of friut mixed with 1 oz of Earths Best Oatmeal. She'll nap from 10:30-12. Nurse at 1, nap from 2-3. Nurse at 4 and then 2oz of veggies and 1 oz of oatmeal at 5:30. Bath at 6:30, nurse at 7 and then bed. So basically 5 feelings and 2 solids a day with 2 naps and she'll STTN from 7-5.

My plan is to give her peas and squash and then start making mixed purées.

Also once she's 8 months I'll start her on 3 meals a day. Breakfast friut and cereal, lunch veggie and cereal, dinner protein and veggie and cereal.

I absolutely love feeding her. She's so cute with her little faces and sounds. I even enjoy seeing how whatever I put into her comes out basically exactly the same.
  • We're doing BLW this time around.  It all started a few weeks ago when DH gave DD a steamed carrot spear.  She loved it.  We don't really have a schedule yet, but right now she gets some sort of fruit or veggie around 6PM before her evening nursing session.  So far we've done pears, carrots, sweat potatoes, steamed apples, pulled pork (just a little tiny bit), butternut squash, and acorn squash.  She will also get some bits of bread if we are having that for dinner, but she usually just mashes it up and doesn't swallow it.  I've just given her DCP the go ahead to start adding some of the above fruits and veggies at lunch.

  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? Avacados, peas, carrots, bananas, pear/blueberry mix. Spinach is up next.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule? Usually an hour after her 5-6 pm feeding.

How much are you giving LO? I've got 2 oz portions made but she probably "eats" an ounce and actually eats 1/2 oz.

Have you experienced any reactions? Nope.

What brand are you using or are you making your own? Making our own except the pear/ blueberry mix was Beechnut Just brand. Thought it would help with the constipation because of the pears but it was the super ripe banana that got her going!
  • @iheartmyshiba, I'm curious how spinach goes! Are you going to mix it with anything to make it less bitter? MH and I have been trying to figure out how to make it palatable to a baby.

@ZeroZeroOne‌ I will probably mix it with a little breast milk! If you aren't BFing, maybe mix with a little bit of formula? They said if you mix it with something that tastes familiar that it helps. Hasn't yet here but ? Haha. I'm starting to think she just doesn't care for food.
  • What solids have you tried and what kind (purees, BLW...)? Sweet potatoes, applesauce and carrots. We are doing purees.

When do you incorporate solids into your feeding schedule?
I try to do it an hour or so after she nurses. During the week it's usually with dinner, on the weekends usually with breakfast.

How much are you giving LO?
However much she seems to want. Usually is about 1/4 or a jar, but only a small amount makes it in her mouth anyway.

    Have you experienced any reactions?
    No.

What brand are you using or are you making your own?
    O Organics from Safeway.

@mamalacy21 You are so brave! Haha!

For all you moms doing avocados .. how are you offering them? Do you just mash them/puree them or are you adding any water/bm/formula? Also, I know they don't keep very well in the fridge or freezer so are you just using some of the avocado and then opening a new one the next day?

ETA: NEVERMIND on the avocados.. just saw this same topic in the random thread
