Trouble TTC

RMA of NJ

Hi ladies, I have my 1st appt w/ RMA (infertility specialist) at the end of the mth and I'm so excited but have many questions as well. I'm going b/c I have pcos and have been trying for 2 yrs w/ no success. My question is how fast can my husband and I choose to do IVF? Do we have to try other options before getting to IVF? Hope to hear from someone soon!

Re: RMA of NJ

  • Have you two done any fertility testing? Both of you will need bloodwork, and he'll need 2 sperm analyses, and you'll need an HSG (for tubes and uterus) and an ultrasound.

The doctor will probably discuss with you what your chances would be with various treatments (oral meds, IUI, injects, IVF) and help you make a decision that makes sense. If you are well under 35, show healthy ovaries, and sperm analysis is great, you might actually find that a few IUIs make sense for you (there are great success rates even without IVF for women with PCOS) - and IVF can be tricky with women with PCOS because it's hard to hit the balance between over and under stimming. But I can't imagine that a doctor would stop a couple from starting with IVF if they prefer the higher success rates.

  • Thanks for all your responses ladies! I'm just tired of waiting already as I'm sure everyone can relate to. If they suggest I start w/ hormones like Clomid I'll try it, but how long is long enough for me to say I would like to do IVF?

I believe most RE's try 3 IUI's before moving on to something else but many will do more than that if you respond well and have no other issues. There are different variations of drugs they can try depending on your response to them. Is there a reason you're in such a hurry to get to IVF? Have you looked into your insurance coverage or IF treatments. Many plans will cover IUI, but not IVF, so that is something to consider in creating a plan for treatment.
