NBR: Engagement Party Etiquette

Hi Ladies,

Haven't been as active as I was prior to baby but have def been lurking lately. I follow some of you mommies on instagram! My instagram is jenbeuerle!

A little about myself, I'm a young mom, 21 years old, just got engaged in October to my little girls Daddy. Not rushing a wedding or doing anything big, we just want a small, simple destination wedding sometime in the next couple years. With moving in mid-october and the holidays I haven't even thought about engagement party, wedding planning etc! Totally kind of nervous about it!

Anyway to get to the point, my friend just got engaged to her high school sweetheart on Christmas eve. Her parents are throwing them an engagement party next month.
Do I bring a gift? If so, what's an appropriate amount to spend and any ideas!? I know there's normally bridal showers that eventually follow and then the actual wedding.
I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to go empty handed. Just looking for your ladies opinions!

Thanks so much for reading my book and thanks in advance!!!

Re: NBR: Engagement Party Etiquette

  • I'm thinking that some kind of small hostess gift should be appropriate, and leave a larger gift for a bridal shower or the wedding itself.

  • I was also going to suggest a bottle of wine! I went to an engagement party in the fall and that's what I did. I didn't notice anyone bringing gifts.
  • A bottle of wine is exactly what I was thinking! But wasn't sure if I needed to do something a little bit more, like an etsy gift or what not. @MaiTaiBeth‌ Aruba is where LO was conceived, I've been there 6 times, I absolutely love it. That's where we want to go, just haven't actually looked into anything yet. I will def check out the board on the knot! Thanks so much!
  • Yep, bottle of wine, or maybe champagne, and a nice card about how happy you are for them would be a great gift!

  • Engagement parties aren't a thing around here. I've never even been invited to one, but congrats to you!!

  • I never had an engagement party (and I've been married twice!). In my neck of the woods it's customary (and expected) to give the bride & groom money, which always led me to calling engagement parties "fundraisers". Mean, I know....

I like the champagne idea, it's classy, fun (who doesn't like bubbles), celebratory and not cash!
  • Oh yes! I second the engagement photo frame! A friend of mine always gets me frames for milestones. It's kind of like "her thing". She gave me an engagement, wedding, sonogram, Christmas, and christening frames.
  • I say it depends... Is this a ice engagement party at a place or is this and endgame my party at a home if it's a nice place I would say no on the bottle of wine.... Maybe get them something engraved

  • I would just turn up with a card :) but at my engagement party we had wine, gift vouchers, money and LOADS of engaged glasses in boxes, about 10 of the same, yeah I've 'lost' those
