Pack-n-play with newborn napper question.

First, I went back a few pages to see if this had been posted. If I missed it, I apologize for the repost. FTM, and I was wondering if the newborn napper thingamajig that comes with some pack-n-plays can be used for the first few months as somewhere to sleep vs a cradle or bassinet (like, when we go to sleep at night). All I can seem to find online is that it's for newborns up to 3 months and or until baby can rollover. Does anyone have any experience with this? I appreciate the help/input.

Re: Pack-n-play with newborn napper question.

  • There were some threads about this way back, I believe I asked this question under another thread and the consensus was that the PNP is pretty much OK for sleeping newborns as a crib or bassinet replacement, and the RNP had more mixed opinions because it's inclined.

  • I'm using this as a bassinet - I did with my son too

I used it for a changing table. Mine did not seem safe enough to use as an actual napper, we put her in the PNP instead.
I did this exact same thing.

  • DD always rolled on her side so I didn't feel comfortable with the bassinet. So she slept in the top part of the p&p in our room. We moved her to her crib at 3 months bc it got too cold in my room (above the garage) so I'm not sure how much longer they can stay in there. You can just put LO in the bottom part of the p&p after that.

  • We got one without all the attachments because it was cheaper and I didn't want to have to store tons of parts. DD1 slept in the high part until she went to her crib at 6 months. Then DD2 slept in a RNP which was glorious because of her bad reflux.

I don't think I'd feel comfortable letting a baby sleep in other than naptime it since it's so high, but without owning one I don't know exactly how sturdy they are.

  • We had a baby Trend pack and play that had like a co-sleeper thing attached. I almost never used it because my daughter had horrible reflux (couldn't lay flat). It seemed pretty sturdy but bigger babies would definitely outgrow it quick! I tried to post a pic of it, but I'm dumb and don't know how from my phone lol!
  • I know someone who solely used their PnP for the first year, but they just put baby inside PnP, and not in the bassinet. I don't know if I would trust the bassinet...

  • all the attachments on the PNP are not needed - the changing table is nice and the diaper holder would be nice (i didnt have that). but the way the PNP works it has 3 different levels like a crib does. so you can easily have a newborn nap in the higher setting. i would save your money and get one iwthout the napper. they are not very sturdy and more of a PITA to store when it is collapsed. i hope that all makes sense haha.
Agree totally with this. We have 2 PNPs (hand me down) and one has that newborn napper/changing table clip on tray thing and I wouldn't really trust that for anything more than a quick newborn catnap if I was right there. And yes, collapsed it's so much more of a pain to transport. And more time to collapse/store. I can fold up and bag our regular PNP in about 2 minutes.

  • The napper was the only thing i could get dd to sleep in when we got home. I only let her nap in it when someone was awake though. Wasnt comfortable using it during the night. This was the first few weeks
  • My MIL bought me a pretty suped up PNP (early shower present) because I don't plan on using a crib at all. I have done a lot of research and a majority of the time they are safer than cribs, bassinets, etc. Just make sure to get a trusted brand and heed the weight limits!

  • We are planning on using PNP in place of crib for the first month or two because we are moving a few weeks after she is born.

@CateOfChicago‌ @emu0013‌ For those of you who did that...did you get a separate mattress for the PNP or just use the "board" that it comes with? It seems a little hard to me...but I know they are supposed to sleep on a firm surface.

  • My brother gifted us this PnP and we plan on using it for at least 3 months in our room beside the bed. It seems like a really versatile product and I feel we will get a lot of use out of it.

I just used it as is @jraeohyeaaa‌. It comes with a little mattress. You use it on the top or the bottom level. I did get the thicker quilted p&p sheet, like below. Dd still naps in her p&p all the time since my mil doesn't like to carry her upstairs. I have a few sheets for laundry purposes. https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Quilted-Playard-Sheet-Cream/dp/B0096MLKES/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420671246&sr=8-1&keywords=quilted+pack+n+play+sheet Edit-link fail

  • I THINK its not recommended by the manufacturer that a child do more than nap, ie must not be unattended in the newborn napper. That being said, this is what we used for our first and what we intend to use this time around, although we only used it for 1 month as they grow out of it quite quickly.

@CateOfChicago‌ when you say mattress you mean the hard mattress that moves up and down for the different heights? Or an additional piece on top of that? We got ours barely used from a reputable BST and she said all the parts were there.

Edit: also meant to ask if you used a waterproof pad underneath the graco sheet?

I'm a day late to the convo, and I haven't formally introduced myself yet, but I wanted to share my ideas because I've actually been researching this all day!
Edit: half my message disappeared. Grr! Let me add.
  • Anyway, bc I also don't think the napper is necessary buy I do like the changing feature, Im leaning towards the graco change n carry or the baby trend nursery center (which has a changer that totally folds over and away!). If I do want a napper I like the graco pnp w/ napper LX. Btw, anyone know the difference between the LX and DLX?

I found this one from Gracco (I think it's 2015 model) the napper is fully removable like a separate bassinet

  • I thought about just getting this one instead of those really expensive ones! It has the top part for a sleeper/changing table and the bottom part for when baby gets older. And it's only $110!! This ones also by Graco.
  • With DD #1 we used one like @BabyShirah posted some nights. Generally we would put her down in her crib and then after the 3rd or so wake up to nurse we would keep her in that by our bed. It lasted longer than I think the napper attachment would.

  • I read that the newborn napper feature really isn't that safe due to SIDS so we are not getting one with that feature.

I wish id gotten a RNP since she had reflux pretty bad, I will get one this time if DD2 has it. ... I personally wouldn't waste the $ on a PNP with a mapper and would use it to buy a RNP if it came to it
YES!!! I agree. I wish I would have had a RNP from the beginning!
