Trouble TTC

Can we talk periods? Is a TMI warning even necessary...

Okay so I know I've mentioned this before but I get massive blood clots.  My periods last anywhere from a day and a half to about 3 days of very heavy bleeding.  Because of this it seems that everything is trying to come out all at once and I'm left with mostly clots.

I'm tired of ruining underwear and sometimes even pants or worse yet, being worried that I've left a spot on the chair I'm getting up from since they come without warning.  I use tampons, different brands, and panty liners but that doesn't seem to solve the problem.  I also refuse to wear pads because they don't seem to absorb the clots and I don't want to be sitting in them.  I've tried soft cups once or twice but I'm afraid of the potential mess at our office public restrooms.  Did I use them wrong?

So here's my question, if you're anything like me, what do you use for protection?  I feel like I'm 12 again trying to navigate this weird thing that's happening to me.  I hate being off of BC.

  • I would go with a diva cup or something similar. I made the switch about 8 months ago and would never go back.
For the first few months I wore a liner with it just in case but you just need to make sure that your cervix is actually in the cup.
The great thing is that you can leave it in for upto 8 hours depending on how heavy the flow is.

  • @Rumbera28‌ you're right. I just meant making sure your cervix isn't caught "outside". When I first used it I think I put it too far up and it wasn't catching anything.
  • My period has been like this since I was a teenager, so I guess I got over the "ick" factor a long time ago.  I use tampons & thin overnight pads, and on heavy days I change tampons very frequently.  The pads don't absorb the clots, but they buy time to get to the bathroom, and have saved me from throwing out a lot of clothing.  Also, I only wear black/dark underwear and pants on heavy days, just in case.
  • That was going to be my next question since I also have a tilted cervix.  I'm definitely going to look into the Diva.  Thanks!
  • I am ignorant of the effects of a lot of medications (so there may be a reason this won't work - my apologies if this is a stupid suggestion), but you mentioned they come without warning? I assume by "they" you mean your period comes without warning. Have you tried temping? After a couple of months I knew exactly when my period was coming (or within 12 to 18 hours) by how my temps dropped. At least then you can be proactive.

  • Temping sounds like a great idea!

Sorry I don't really have advice - but I just want to say I am really sorry, it sounds awful. :( I hope you soon don't have to worry about AF for a long time! ;)

  • I agree with the Diva cup suggestion!  I don't have heavy clotting but I imagine it would be very helpful for that.  It holds way more than a pad or tampon with way less mess.  I still wear a pantiliner with it in case it's not positioned quite right, but it's usually not an issue.  I don't think your cervical position/tilt should be an issue - the cup should just expand in your vagina to create a seal. Just make sure you're keeping it clean and washing your hands before you use it so you don't get infected.

  • I feel like I just read my own diary. I am in the same boat as you. I am in constant fear of that too. I usually use a tampon and a pad and just make sure that I change on a frequent basis. It sucks, but it is the only thing that has helped me.

  •  Thanks @lemonliz.  Sorry I'm late to the party.  Yeah sorry I meant the clots come without warning @meredithcarole. Thankfully I'm like clockwork when it comes to my periods and charting definitely helps with that.
