Success after IF

Intro and Question

Hi I have been a regular on 3T and the IF  board, and I am now six 1/2 weeks pregnant with one baby after ivf #1. I have a question for you ladies. How many u/s did your RE do before you moved on to your regular OB? I had one u/s at 6 weeks, and the plan is that they will continue my care until 12 weeks. I will have an u/s every two weeks, so one at 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks. I am concerned about too many scans being harmful to the baby. I know there was recently a segment on one of the morning shows about u/s being more harmful than originally thought to the fetus. I have also read about several studies about limiting u/s being safer for the baby. Is it typical for RE's to do this many u/s? Are any of you concerned about risks associated with u/s?

I know I probably sound crazy, because most women ( especially after dealing with IF) are probably glad to get so many chances to check on the baby, but I tend to be more the natural hippie chick type. :)

Re: Intro and Question

  • First off, congratulations on your pregnancy!!

I had 2 ultrasounds at my RE before being released after my DD was conceived on my third IVF cycle.  I had a bunch of ultrasounds with my OB and MFM due to being high risk.  I was worried about the number of ultrasounds but the information I found that was recent along with the advice from my doctors (of which there were many) agreed that it was safe to have all of the ultrasounds I would be having (had).  I had a bleeding scare in second trimester which meant about 4 more ultrasounds than would have otherwise been needed.  But, I was still getting them every few weeks for growth purposes.

Good luck with your decision.  But, know that there are people out there who base their fear off of old, outdated information.  And, depending on your risk factors and OB/midwife practice, you may not have many more ultrasounds!  My sister has four kids through spontaneous pregnancies (I am the only infertile in my family) and she only had one ultrasound with each and that was the anatomy scan.

  • Welcome and congratulations!

I had two ultrasounds before being released to my OB.  The first one was around 5 weeks and we saw a sac, and the second was around 7 weeks and we saw the heartbeat.

Personally, I was never worried about too many ultrasounds.  I had one ultrasound a month after being released to my OB.  But to be honest I haven't really read up on any new info (that you may have).

    Wishing you a H&H 9 months!

  • Congrats on your pregnancy!  While we are always happy to have new members, you might find more girls who are in your situation at PAIF (Pregnant After IF.)  We have all had our babies already.  I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy, and come back to join us after LO arrives!

And FWIW I had weekly u/s with my RE from 6 weeks to 12 weeks, then I had 3 u/s with my OB.  My LOs are just fine.  Try not to worry too much.

  • Congrats @TLooney17...... I only had one ultra sound with my RE (which is not the norm), but I started at my OB just a week and a half later and had another one. I wound up having 8 ultra sounds with my LO, which is well above normal and there was no issues at all, she's an amazing healthy little girl. This time around I am expecting just as many, if not more because I had a LEEP done last year so I will need some additional monitoring on my cervix. Like others have mentioned I would just enjoy all the pics of your baby :)

  • Congrats!! I had two with my RE, I think one at 6, another at 7, and then begged for one with my first on appt at 8.5-9 wks. After so many m/c I needed the reassurance that LO was still doing well. M is happy, healthy, and one smart little cookie. I would not worry, but I would also encourage you to go with your gut feeling. None of my u/s were long either. Congrats!!

  • I had 1 ultrasound where they confirmed the pregnancy and then was d/c to an ob/gyn.  My pregnancy was high risk so I had a lot of ultrasounds.  I was concerned and asked my MFM specialist.  He explained that the risks with ultrasounds comes from how long each individual ultrasound is more than how many ultrasounds you have.  When an ultrasound is done for an extended period of time (which is more likely to occur when people have ultrasounds for fun-just to see their baby as they are often done by less skilled techs), the amniotic fluid can heat up causing damage to the fetus.

U/S at the RE's office--especially early in pregnancy are very quick as they can only really check for a hb at that age.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!
