How Important are Burps These Days?

So, in my desperate search of sleep, I'm looking at every little thing that might be making LO uncomfortable and waking her up.  Of course, I realize she's a baby and there may be no answer...it's just what babies do.

Anyway, are you still burping your baby?  If you have a reflux baby, are you still holding her/him upright for awhile before sleep?  If you're not getting burps, do you notice any difference in sleep?  We are rarely getting burps out of LO these days once she's asleep (which is almost always once she's been fed but am going to try to change that up).

Re: How Important are Burps These Days?

  • I nurse LO and he doesn't have many burps or spit ups. At all. However, I still burp him whenever he finishes on a breast before offering him the second breast. When he gets a bottle, I have DH burp him halfway through (and if course after he finishes) since he does get gassier when bottle-fed.

At night, if he falls asleep while nursing I just put him back in his bassinet without burping him. Hasn't caused us any issues!

  • I do the same as above. I burp her at least once halfway through, and at the end during the day, but at her "middle of the night" feed, I don't even take her out of the crib. I was wondering if I should try to burp her then (this was on my mind, since she threw up last night, and has been squirmy the past week or so after this feeding, but she does go back to sleep).

  • I EBF and don't burp her at night.

This. When my mom feeds a bottle, she burps him after every ounce but at night, I don't bother.

  • If DS falls asleep during/right after a MOTNF I don't burp him. If he's still semi conscious I will. I haven't had a problem thus far when I forego the burps.

  • I haven't been burping at night, but will be for the last few feedings before bed since M has been waking up uncomfortable and gassy the past few days. I think he's swallowing more air with all his hand sucking.

This. I actually only burp DD if she's had a bottle or if she's crying at the breast. During the day she burps on her own if I hold her upright, no patting required.

  • FF and I still burp him, though he definitely burps more on his own now than when I try to do it.  I noticed that shifting him around so he does it himself tends to be more effective than anything I do.

This is us during the day if she's awake.  Case in point, though...put her down for a nap an hour ago.  She had three ounces (she's EFF), totally fell asleep, put her on my shoulder trying ot get out a burp for awhile and couldn't.  Held upright for a bit then put her down.  Less than an hour later she's wide awake and once I pick her up lets out the biggest burp.  Don't think DH could've competed with it!  Clearly she still needs to get them out and maybe would have slept longer, but I think I have to resign myself to the fact taht there's not a ton I can do.

  • I normally burp lo halfway through the bottle and at the end.  But I have started skipping the halfway burp because I loses his damn mind and is very angry at me.  So I cut my losses and try and keep my little man somewhat appeased.  Hopefully I am not raising an tyrant (Just Joking, you can't spoil a baby).
  • I usually burp when switching sides, for those keeping track that's half way through ;-) And very rarely at night unless she's extra squirmy. Honestly she burps herself a lot lately
This DD takes care of her gas with farts and a few burps. I do not burp her at night, she looks at me like I am crazy and then retaliates by screaming in my ear.
Yeah interrupting meal time makes her seriously pissed. totally my baby...

  • @Nicb13...How long did you use Dr. Brown's?  I always thought those were the best for preventing air bubbles, but maybe I should try something else...I've used the from the start and they're such a pain in the ass to clean!  Would love if something worked better for her.

  • I EBF and only burp if she seems uncomfortable.
  • If I am BFing I do burp her when switching breasts... when bottle feeding I burp her half way through. I always try to burp her. H tries to feed her in the RNP.  I don't know that it makes a difference with sleeping but she seems to spit up more easily if I don't burp her. I burp at MOTN feedings as well. She sleeps right through it and goes back down pretty easy
