Thoughts on Sara Kimberly "Robot"?

H and I have been trying to find a name related to a book we love. I have Sara on my list for the children's book A Little Princess that I loved reading as a kid.

H is on board and loves the meaning behind the name but I am worried its just not enough of a name. My favorites right now are Cara, Willa, Mina, Greta, Thea, and Mabel. I don't feel like Sara can compete with them. Thoughts?

  • I'm just meh about it. I'm not a fan of Sara, its just really plain and so common. I love Willa and Thea and Greta are great too. They're much better options in my opinion

It's fine. Not swoon worthy or something I would pick but there also isn't anything wrong with it.
Haha. This sums up the feelings perfectly which isn't a good thing.

  • It's okay. Certainly a fine name, but not remarkable. I think pairing Sara with Kimberly also gives it an 80s vibe.

I love, love, love Greta though. So annoyed I couldn't talk my H into it!
I agree with you that it dates the name but Kimberly is my moms name and I am holding fast to it. I cant get my H on board with Greta either. Drives me nuts.

  • I like the name, but it sounds like too many R sounds with your last name, if that makes sense.

Greta is the best one on your list.

*Eta why Kimberly? I'm assuming it's a family name.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • My favorite from your list is Cara, but Sara is a fine name as well.
  • Sarah is fine
    Kimberly is dated

  • I love it.  Sara is a great name. Very refreshing.  Kimberly, while slightly dated is normal and correctly spelled so it's totally fine.

No actually R in the last name. It is my go to sound alike.

My moms name. We were thinking of using just Kim as a MN because it is her NN but we have a family line of girls named Kimiko so we want to be specific

  • I love Sarah-- but prefer this spelling with the H.  If you like NNs, it also lends itself to that-- Sally and Sadie are both adorable.

I like Sara spelled that way; it's my sister's name, so I'm partial (and I dig Ben Folds' song Zak and Sara).  Kimberly is NMS, but I appreciate wanting to honor your mom. I'd go with Kimberly instead of Kim; Kim sounds incomplete to me.

ETA: I love the idea of naming your daughter after a favorite book! My name has a literary association as well as a familial connection, which I've always liked.
  • I prefer Sarah with an H and definitely not with Kimberly. I agree with PP's that Kimberly is dated.

  • I love the name Sarah/Sara spelled either way. It's classic and lovely. In my opinion it will never go out of style and I love the potential nicknames as well (e.g. Sadie and Sally). It's my #1 name choice if we have a girl and we would call her Sadie.

Kimberly is definitely dated although still a nice name and I love that you want to honor your mother. Might she have a middle name that could work better?

I don't care for Willa, Thea or Mina at all. Cara and Greta are better but I wouldn't choose them either.

Her MN is Jean. It isn't an option because she hates it.

Are there any of variants of Kimberly that have less of an 80s vibe? The only one I can think of is Kimbra, which was my aunt's name.

  • Sara is a classic name, which will never be associated with a particular timeframe because it is always in use. I don't feel like that can be said of other names on your list.

I also like Willa, but I think names like Thea and Greta and Mabel (read: older names) are going to be associated with this time period.

Cara is the one I don't think competes.

How about choosing another name beginning with 'K' to honor her? Would she be alright with that or does she specifically want you to use Kimberly?

    Some suggestions:
    Sara Kate

    Sara Kathleen
