Sugar-free, Low Sodium Meals

Girls, I need help! MH's grandmother is in the hospital with a stomach bug. She's doing well, all things considered, but her recovery may take a while. The family is pulling together to take care of Papaw bc he has had a lot of heart issues lately and needs to be checked in daily. I am in charge of putting together some meals and snacks, but they need to be low-calorie, sugar-free, and low cholesterol. I don't even know where to start looking to find recipes that fit all these requirements. Any suggestions?

Re: Sugar-free, Low Sodium Meals

  • Check the Whole30 meal planning post.  Most whole 30 stuff is going to be sugar free, low cal, and healthy.  Stick with lean meats with veggies.  Don't cook with butter.  Use a light spritz of olive oil, and use spices to help out the flavor.  So baked chicken breasts with roasted veggies would be good.  Turkey meatloaf (try to avoid beef) would be another good one, just be cautious what you add to it (ketchup and some tomato sauces have added sugar.)  I think you could roast (or crock pot) a pork loin, and that would be pretty lean, but make sure it's a loin, a lot of pork is very fatty.)
The veggies you would want to limit would be potatoes, corn, carrots, and peas.  So stick to green veggies like asparagus, broccoli, greens, etc.
Does that help?  You could look at Cooking Light for recipes, look for low carb.  And I know @mapleme can help with this.

I second the cooking light recipes.

I started got a free subscription for my mileage that was going to expire.  There are a boat load of good options.  I've made one meal already and it was really good.

Stay away from shrimp or limit their use.  They are high in cholesterole.

  • For snacks: in my house having a bag of carrots and a thing of celery from the store would just sit untouched....take a few minutes to slice the carrots and celery into sticks then put in fridge.....they get eaten. So maybe cut up some raw veggies for him to snack on or add to salads with minimal effort.
