NBR: The Post Partum Haircut

So last time around I got a huge urge to change my hair during the thrid trimester. I had a summer baby so it was HOT and I needed the hair off my neck.

Question: Are you going for a hair makeover after the baby is out? If so, show us your inspiration.

Here is my before and after from last time around. Not sure what I will go for this time.

Re: NBR: The Post Partum Haircut

  • I always do a haircut before I have the baby. It's hard for me to find the time after a newborn arrives, so I have already done mine. My hair was down to my lower back. I went for the same style, just cut 4in off! Love your pics by the way.

  • Maybe I should go do something. But the only time my hair grows is when I'm pregnant and I know H likes it long. Maybe highlights and a trim.
  • I just got my bangs trimmed to be more full. I know a new baby will mean less shower/primping time and now I can tie my hair back and use a little dry shampoo and my hair looks much cuter than just a pony tail with no bangs. They are also long enough (just past eyebrows) that I can easily pin them back.

I'm growing the length out though. I find it so much easier to just have very long hair I can tie up rather than short hair that has to be fixed.

  • @Smyers2girls‌ that's a great tip! As a FTM I probably wouldn't have thought to get my hair cut before the baby's arrival and would have been upset about my unmanageable hair. Now I know! Thanks! And thanks op for the helpful thread!
  • Just changed my hair up. I usually like to be super blonde, but know that I won't have time to keep up with highlights after the baby comes so I went close to my natural with a few thin highlights. Also got a few inches lopped off so I can go as long as possible without needing to get my hair done again.
  • @kkleigh10 i know you didn't ask me, but I use Batiste dry shampoo. I think you can get it in different shades for darker or lighter hair and different scents. Also, baby powder or cornstarch work just as well for me. Some dry shampoos are just aerosolized cornstarch.
  • I want my perm back sooo bad. I know perms are totally 90s but I loved mine. I had one for about 2 years before I made the mistake of cutting it to donate and ending up with the dreaded mushroom bob. So I had it straightened back out. I have regretted it ever since. It was so much easier to deal with.

  • My H and I had an agreement that I would grow my hair out until we had a baby. This started 2 years ago. It was pixie short then. Now it's a little past my shoulders. Part of me thinks I'll keep it long because it's easy to just pull into a pony tail, but part of me thinks once I lose the baby weight I might just chop it all off again for ease of maintenance. He definitely thinks I'm cutting it all off. We'll see I guess

@kkleigh10 - I just use the cheap suave stuff. Most of the time I will just bend over the sink and give them a quick wash with a pea sized amount of shampoo, then quick dry them with the blow dryer. It takes all of 2 minutes and really makes me feel more pulled together than all my hair back or unfixed.

FWIW, I have straight/fine hair that used to get so oily. I started using sulfate free shampoo that doesn't strip the oils and a vinegar rinse years ago and only wash my hair maybe 2-3 times a week. Now I could probably go a week without my hair getting really gross looking, not that I've done that though lol This may not work if you have textured hair or damaged/colored hair though.

Edit: If you wash your hair daily and strip the natural oils, your scalp over produces to keep your hair healthy. This is why some people get oily bangs by the afternoon. The same happens to your face if you wash too much. When you space washings and allow the oils to stay, production slows way down after a while and your hair stays healthier, too.

  • I just got my pre baby haircut this morning. I got about six inches cut off. Like PP, there isn't time after the baby.
  • Nope nope nope!!! Made my hairdresser promise me that she won't cut it even if I ask her. It always seems like a good idea to cut it off, then I realize I look terrible with short hair!!
  • I have red hair and also gray hair, well, white.  I've been getting white hairs since I was around 14.  Since I don't intend to allow the white to grow out, I'm going to have to figure out how to get my hair done after LO arrives. I have an appointment scheduled a week before my due date so if all works out, I'll look okay at delivery.  Yes, I know, so vain.

I did just let her chop 3 inches off, but I made her swear not to let me talk her into cutting it really short until 6 months after LO arrives.  Right now it is just past my shoulders.  I look okay with short hair, but it looks better medium to long.   If I still want to cut it short after 6 months I'll know it is more than just the hormones talking.

For those of you usingn dry shampoo, have any of you used it after working out?  I sweat like a pig when I work out and would really love it if dry shampoo worked and I didn't have to wash my hair every day.

  • I use just regular baby powder as a dry shampoo quite often. I've been doing this for years!

I cut my hair from mid back to chin length during 2nd tri. Just last week I got a trim (now shoulder length) and got my bender perm redone. Curls are so much easier!

  • @kkleigh10, I use Kenra's dry shampoo... Also like PP's mentioned you can use like a baby powder, really any kind of powder to dry up the oil will work just fine!

  • I had longish hair with short bangs when I was pregnant with DS. Bangs are fun for a while, then I hated them. Last year, I had super long hair with an ombre color I did myself. My friend convinced me to let him dye it dark with some red.  Right now, I have longish redish brown hair with ugly short layers ( I don't know what I was thinking). I want to grow out the layers and repeat the ombre look,  but I don't know. Is ombre out?? This is my hair journey...

  • My hair was driving me crazy almost past my bra line so I got a Bob cut and now it's driving me crazy that it's uneven. I really need to color my hair as it's all kinds of messed up right now and I'll probably even out the Bob. I'm afraid of how short it will be though. Anyone do the Bob then cut it one length? I have super thick wavy hair

This for me. I like having long hair - a pony is the best hairstyle for someone with very little time for personal maintenance.

But pretty much the only time my hair grows is while I'm pregnant. Otherwise, it grows less than a 1/4" per month. :(

Then about 6mo after baby, it all falls out in clumps and looks disgusting and straggly. I have fine, thin hair that thankfully has enough volume not to look fine and thin. Except post partum when 50% of it falls out.

My hair hasn't been past my shoulders since about 2010 due to having babies. I am really looking forward to being able to just grow my hair long and not having to worry about pregnancy/post partum hair loss.

You should throw that Suave crap out. It's full of waxes, among other things hair doesn't like, and is actually terrible for your hair. If you want decent products to keep your hair healthy then you're going to have to pay for them. Amazon always has good prices if you don't want to pay the salon price and I send a lot of my clients that way if they can't afford to spend a lot on product.

this is so true.  i went 2.5 years without using anything but water to wash my hair (i know i sound like a nut).  we moved out of state and got pregnant at the same time, so i'm not sure which is to blame (i'm thinking the move and the change in water), but i gave up and started using shampoo a few months back.  but i still only have to wash my hair once a week.  the rest of the time it doesn't even get wet in the shower.  and i used to be one of those people who was a greaseball by 4pm.
