Waterproof Crib Mattress....Do I need a cover too?

I purchased an organic cotton mattress that says it is waterproof (LA Baby brand from Costco). When I saw online that it was waterproof I was expecting that it would have some type of cover that was removable. However, it does not. It specifically says that no additional waterproof cover is needed, but it just feels soft like a regular mattress and does not have a cover that comes off. I've been trying to research how I would go about cleaning it if it gets poop/pee/vomit on it and have come up with nothing helpful. Most of what I've found via searching the Bump forums and Google says that waterproof crib mattresses can just be wiped down with disinfectant wipes, but it sounds like this advice is referring to the type of waterproof mattress that feels smooth and plastic-y. This one is not like that at all, so I'm confused as to how I would go about cleaning it and I'm wondering if it would make more sense to just get a waterproof cover anyway. Does anyone else have a mattress like this or have any experience with cleaning them?

  • If it is not smooth and plasticy, but rather absorbant then it can't be waterproof. Waterproof means that water can't penetrate it lol So pour some water on it and see what happens.

Our crib mattress is the sealy soybean foam one and it is plastic on the outside. I wanted something with a bit more loft to it so we got this organic cover from Babies R Us and I really like it. I washed it and put it on the mattress and it makes it feel more cozy while also making an easy layer I can wash. https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12334193&fromRegistryNumber=55144223&product_skn=296168

  • I got a truly waterproof mattress on Amazon & all the reviews said to get a waterproof cover anyway - easier to wash than a pool of urine on the mattress itself (worst case scenario).
  • I have a waterproof mattress and still put a cover on it. I figured it was easier to rip it off and throw in the wash if it was the middle of the night.

This exactly. It may not make it's way into the mattress but in the middle of the night do you want to try to clean a puddle of pee/poop/puke? or would you rather pull the sheets and replace them with clean ones?

Also I suggest buying more then one (like 2 or 3 sets) that way in the middle of the night you have a clean one ready to be put on the mattress.
