Restless Legs in 3rd Trimester

Anyone else losing sleep at night with restless legs? This just started for me a couple days before my 3rd trimester started. Started off as sporadic but now it's pretty consistent when I try to lay down to sleep at night. Going on night #3 of very little disrupted sleep. Any suggestions how to cope? I tried heating pads and the marathon stick which provides tenporary relief, but not always long enough for me to fall asleep. Also if I wake up, I then have to start the heating pad and rubbing routine again which wakes me up. *note: I've never had this before... also, first pregnancy.

I have always had a little bit of RLS but it definitely gets worse during pregnancy.  Things that help me are taking a Benedryl to help me fall asleep faster, getting up to move around for a few minutes and then laying back down, a pillow between my knees or as a last resort, sleeping in the guest bedroom (when I am thinking about trying to stay still and not bother DH it seems impossible and sometimes sleeping in the other room takes the pressure off if that makes sense).

  • Ugh. My legs have been so restless lately but thankfully haven't disrupted sleep much. I almost always sleep with my blanket between my legs though so that might help me.
  • I have been getting restless legs more recently. One thing that works for me is taking some magnesium about 30 minutes before going to bed. I like the brand called Natural Calm. Start out with a smaller amount than recommended, because some people say it has a laxative effect.
  • Yes, common symptom. Do we need a fresh symptoms thread?

  • I started getting that over the weekend, I started my third trimester today. Sucks...I'm a ftm so I have no advice...but hopefully it doesn't last the next 3 months!!!
  • I had Restless Legs with my first pregnancy. I remember it having started by now so I'm hoping I'll luck out this time because I never got any relief until I was just so tired from tossing and turning that I'd fall asleep for a few hours.

  • I get them when I'm sleepy in general, but especially now! They tend to happen before I go to sleep. I find that a hot shower (not too hot!) sometimes helps, or a heating pad to relax me generally before I sleep.

  • Yes, this has been my worst symptom so far! It started about a month ago for me. I had a prenatal massage on Saturday, and that did wonders. But a few days later it's already back. Tylenol before bed helps. Hope you find some relief!
  • I am having this issue as well.  I always seem to have a little bit of RLS but pregnancy has definitely made it worse.  I have found that having DH rub my legs helps or just getting up and moving!
  • Lucky you. I have been dealing with this for months now
  • Thank you everyone!! I had nooooo idea this was a symptom until it started, then I started the Google magic to see what's going on. I tried the pillow between the knees last night which helped with comfort a bit but didn't releave it enough to stay asleep. Heating pad helps but seems to depend on the severity and the day. I bought a heating blanket last night on Amazon which I'm hoping will have a better effect since I can wrap all of my legs in it compared to just a small square. I haven't tried magnesium or anything like that yet, although I got my blood taken today (after begging my GP) to test for any deficiency.. Iron, folate, whatever might cause this so I know which foods to persue to supplement... Part of me wonders if it's just the fact that my belly feels like it's doubling in size now and maybe putting pressure on my spine when I'm resting... Think that's possible? If so.. Something like Benadryl as some of you mentioned might be the option. Fingers crossed and prayers! I'm an emotional basket case on little sleep. I was hoping to get rested up before the little one comes!!! I'll post the blood test results if it is showing a deficiency and what the treatment is. Thank you all you lovely ladies. Thanks for the support!!!! <3 Hope we all feel better ;-)

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with it for months! How do you cope? It's been a little over a week for me, 3 days no sleep and I'm just beside myself, lol. I really hope you feel better soon! It's certainly not fun.

    Ops duplicate post. Sorry! Corrected!

Yes, for sure hubby helps with massage to fall asleep... The prob is with my little one loving to kick so low in my belly lately I feel like I have to pee every I hour lol. Then once I'm up and hubby is snoring... I feel bad waking him up for another rub down. That's when I try turning the heating pad back on or using the marathon stick to rub out the muscle, but seems like as soon as I lay back down the sensation creeps back up before I fall asleep. Bummer!!! Thanks so much for responding!!!

I cannot agree more omg. For me this is worse that the dizziness, morning sickness, sinus... you name It! The nights seem so long with hubby sleeping peacefully beside me. I'd love to cuddle and pass out next to him but I couldn't lay still long enough to enjoy. I can't wait to try a prenatal massage. I have a friend that comes to the house to do that but he can't come til next week... Fingers crossed that massage does the trick!!!!!

Yes ! Heat for sure helps! I wish I could get that sensation to last through all my wake up and pee breaks in the night lol. The heating pad doesn't compare to the relief of the shower. Maybe the heating blanket will help! I ordered one that should be here tomorrow. Praying for relief!

Yup that's the only sleep I got last week after 3 days of being up I slept one night solid, didn't get up once. An earthquake wouldn't have woke me! Lol! I'm on night 3 this week now with like an hour sleep. Hopefully tonight is one of those "pass out" nights. Hubby has agreed to camp out on the couches with me tonight and watch movies which seems to distract me enough to to ignore my legs... I might try a whole night of that and see if it helps!!! For some reason the couch seems more comfortable to me right now too! Maybe it's psychological? Lol.

I'm so happy you don't have it again this time. I want 3 kids and this was the only symptom that made my say "hmmmmm... Lol" but I really want more little ones so I will have to learn how to cope if so! Thanks for the feedback...!!!!! <3

I'll have to give that a try! Thanks! I'm totally desperate at this point! Glad you found something that helps you!!!
  • I've had restless legs for a long (long) time and I have never had anything work as well as avoiding getting overtired in the first place. It's the worst when I'm sleepy and have antsy legs trying to stay awake, then finally go to bed and can't stop moving them. I don't have any advice for curing them in the moment :(

  • I know restless legs are annoying but every time I read this phrase, I picture someone who has out of control dancing legs and it's really amusing to me.

  • Benedryl always makes my restless
Legs worse. So does unisom. The only thing I've found that honestly works for me when I'm miserable is ambien. I am so sorry that you are going through this as well. It really sucks!!!
  • I've had RLS for years. Best non medication relief I have had luck with is yoga, chiropractic and therapeutic stretches for my low back, hip flexors and legs. I've noticed it acting up recently and upped my leg and hip flexor stretches and it's eased up a bit.
I also find that having something between my legs when I lay in bed helps. I still find that I rub my calves and feet together rhythmically when I'm trying to fall asleep though. I've become so oblivious that I'm doing it, but DH reminds me pretty often.

  • It's horrible. I've had it for quite some time now. Typically I will take some Benadryl to help me sleep but I just walk around the house to get my legs to calm down.
