Placenta/cervix positioning

Hi ladies. Went in for my follow up ultrasound regarding how close the placenta is to the cervix opening. (At 20 weeks, they said it was too close....) Anyway, today's ultrasound showed no improvement. OBGYN said that it "can" change in the next few weeks. I come back in 3 weeks for another measurement. If it's not better, then I will have a scheduled c-section. :( Anyone experience this before & had things change for vaginal delivery? I'm so bummed.

It's not fully or even partially covering the cervix. They want it 2.5mm away from opening. I'm at 1.5mm away.....

Re: Placenta/cervix positioning

  • M15 lurker here, with 3 more weeks and only 1mm to move you still have a chance for getting the go ahead to deliver vaginally. I have placenta previa and a recheck this week as well so I completely understand feeling bummed!

Just to play devils advocate, the risks of post partum hemorrhage with the placenta that close to the cervix is fairly substantial. Not a chance I personally would want to take. Even if they decide the safest method is a csection, you at least get peace of mind that they are doing everything they can to keep you and baby safe!

I will send good vibes though that it does resolve and you are safe and happy!

  • My first was placenta previa (full) and it moved a week before my due date. Little man was born vaginally at 40w5d.
  • OBGYN told me that if there was no change in 3 weeks (which puts me at 35w4d) then a c-section would be scheduled at 39 weeks. She made it sound like that was the end of it.... But you give me some hope @winterbabe2015‌.

I'm just terrified of a c-section. Obviously I don't want to put the baby's health or my health at risk. I'm worried mainly about not being able to bond with baby immediately upon birth. DD was on my bare chest within seconds and it was amazing. I'm afraid that won't happen. Plus I'm scared of the recovery ect. Obviously less scared of a c-section than having the placenta rupture and having hemorrhaging. I just really wanted to wait and have this little guy decide to come when he's ready.

  • I had this with my first - and it moved by my 34th week appointment.  Ultimately, while I tried for a vaginal delivery, I still ended up with a c-section b/c baby's heart rate dropped with my contractions (I think she ended up getting stuck).  To help put your mind at ease, if you end up with a c-section - I was able to bond with my baby right away.  They put my LO on my chest right away (while I was still on the table getting stitched up!)  (Someone just had to help hold her because I was shaking a bit from the epidural.)  And I immediately got to breastfeed her in the recovery room w/in the hour.  So hang in there - hope it moves for you!
  • I had a partial previa - placenta was 1 away from cervix at 20 weeks. I went for a re-check at 28 weeks and it moved up to 3 away. If it hadn't moved, they would have continued to do u/s checks right until the end. It still can move, so try not to worry too much :)

  • As I am a FTM I haven't experienced it. But my mom told me all her experiences.  With my sis she had full placenta previa which actually corrected itself right before her induction.  She was actually going in for an induction VBAC but my sis was transverse which was the only reason she had to get a RCS.  I've had a few friends have it correct itself too.  Good luck FX for ya!

This isn't always the case, though. I asked for skin to skin in the OR and BFing ASAP. The hospital would not let me. They took my babies and would not give them back to me until I was in the Mother/ Baby unit (one went to the NICU so that's obviously a different circumstance, but the other baby had no trouble and they wouldn't let him stay with me in the OR or Recovery).
