What's wrong with my kid?

So, DH said he was fine all morning. Ate lunch fine. After lunch starting saying his belly hurts. Then was like writhing in pain. Laid down and fell asleep, which is very uncommon for him.

I got home about a half hour ago and he woke up and ate half a little bag of cookies (his request). Now, he's writhing in pain again. He hasn't pooped since Saturday. He often goes that long, but usually feels discomfort when he does. Nothing like this though. No fever. No vomiting.

What is wrong with him and what do I do? I called the doc, but I think I called too late to get an answer.

  • I see this pedia-lax stuff has anyone ever used it?

He won't drink any juice at all. He's realllly stubborn.

  • I agree that writhing in pain is a reason to be seen urgently; I would guess that the nurse line will say the same. Good luck to you both! Abdominal pain is so wretched.

Pedia-lax glycerine enema/suppositories work great. They are 5mL of liquid glycerine and usually produce results quickly. I would try this and if the pain continues, I agree w/ go to UC. Appendicitis often comes w/ fever and vomiting, but intussusception usually has intermittent, severe (doubled over) pain and no fever.
Do you have any experience with the chewable tablets from pedia-lax?

He's acting totally fine now. So maybe it was a really big gas bubble combined with constipation? I still feel anxious, naturally.

  • @CFox815, just regular Miralax, there's no kid's version or anything? Like, what, a spoonful per sippy?

Hey stomach pain can turn into scariness quickly, so it's okay to have been worried.  I'm glad he seems to be feeling better.  Like TLex said - when I had my appendix rupture the first thing the ER doc did was press on my belly.  When I literally fell off the hospital bed in pain when he released, they ordered all the scans and I was in surgery in 45 minutes.  But when mine hit, it was a constant, growing pain. So if he's going back and forth between hurting and feeling fine, I'd say try some Miralax and maybe try to get him to do some stretches that help release trapped gas.

Edited because I realised my longer story could identify me to people who know me IRL, internet security and all that.
  • Is the stomach pain on the lower right side? If so, I would go the ER. If not, it's probably just constipation.

  • My 17 month olds have constipation issues. We were told by the nurse line that we can use regular miralax. Since they are smaller, we use 1/4 capful with 6 oz of water.

It works quite well and doesn't cause any sharp stomach cramps like other things do.

She said there are some children who take it daily, so we use it as needed. I've used it myself and it works well.

    I hope he feels better!
  • LO gets 1-2 teaspoons miralax in 2-3 oz of apple juice. That keeps things moving for him b

We used pedia lax on DS before we took him to the pedi when he was ill earlier this week. It worked well after we gave him 2 at one time.

When we got him in to our pediatrician she told us to use miralax - the regular adult kind. She said we could do half the adult dose. She preferred that over the pedia-lax. IMO it doesn't have fast results like the pedia lax does, but that may be the point.
