Possible Incompetent Cervix!

I'm trying not to freak out but I am freaking out. Today was my Anatomy scan and my Baby is normal and healthy.

BUT of course, my cervix is shortening and this is a concern. So I am back to hating my body today. I go back in two weeks to see if things get progressively worse. One of the hardest things about this diagnosis is the fact that the trauma and lacerations of my previous loss history caused my cervix to weaken.

Any success stories?

The fact that they caught it is great. With a cerclage and bedrest, Wolfette was able to carry her baby to term and have a healthy delivery.

Big hugs, I know it's super scary right now, but the good thing is that they're monitoring and tracking you and aware of the potential issue!!!

Yes, Thank you, @southernyankeegirl , I keep telling myself to be glad they caught it . I am just afraid of the worst esp after such a long road to get this far.

I have an awful mixture of dread, fear and self loathing going on right now.

I have no personal experience, but my SiL dealt with a shortened cervix for the 2nd half of her pregnancy. She decided against stitches to keep her cervix closed (though, personally, if my MFM recommended them, I'd get them). She spent the rest of her pregnancy on bed rest at home, and she gave birth to a healthy girl at 37 weeks.

Although born a little prematurely, my niece is now a healthy 9 year old.

So sorry about the news and I have no personal experience other than to tell you our cousin had the same thing and carried to term with a healthy baby after some bed rest and stitches. Good luck

I am measuring at 3.74.

The worst part is the that my cervix is dilating most likely because of the trauma and lacerations of my previous miscarriage history. UGH. Very upset with my lady bits right now.

Not sure if this is helpful but at my anat scan yesterday with MFM they said anything over 3 is good.

I am trying not to be depressed but at first the dr scheduled the appt for 3 weeks then changed to 2 weeks for an update, so I am just imagining my healthy daughter in peril b/c of me and my incompetent, advanced maternal age, recurring loss body. its hard.

FWIW I read that during pregnancy they are only concerned at 2.2 or less so perhaps they are just being overly cautious and yours stays just how it is

I have heard anything over a 3 is good, but dilating is definitely worrisome. They'll monitor you, and if needed place a cerclage and put you on bedrest. Thank goodness at least they found the issue to monitor! Keep us updated.

here is the best news! My friend emailed me last night:

I did some research tonight and your cervical length is low risk. Less than 2.0cm at 20 weeks would need to be followed more closely and possibly start the progesterone(steroid) shots. Sometimes it can still lengthen during pregnancy. There are also several treatment options that are successful. Progesterone shots, cerclage(usually before 22 weeks) and bed rest. I would probably avoid intercourse, rest when you can, stay hydrated and urinate often especially after all that water you should be drinking. Dehydration can cause contractions. A short cervix<2.5cm is of real concern if there has been other second trimester losses/miscarriages. If yours is >3.5cm then I think you will be fine.

It sounds like they are really just being cautious (which is absolutely a good thing). As others have said, anything >3cm isn't concerning but if there is reason to believe there could be shortening or if you are considered at-risk based on history/past procedures, then it is obviously best to be followed with regular measurements. Wishing you smooth sailing and no shortening!
