Umbilical Hernia

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, but I haven't come across this before.

I noticed the other day that JJ's belly button looked a little odd. Nothing wrong, per se, just not the same as the other kids' have been. So I made a mental note to ask the ped at her 2 mo check-up today. Turns out she has an umbilical hernia and whenever she cries hard or bears down to poop, a small bit of intestine sneaks through a hole in her abdominal wall, pushing out her belly button. The ped was not concerned and said it should close on it's own by her 1st birthday.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this before I turn to Dr. Google and freak myself out.

Emmy had a very slight one. Her ped put silver nitrate on it and it healed right up. Super easy and pain free. Can you ask them to try that? I would be concerned with an infection or something else if they make you wait a year?

DD has one but its been going in slowly every week. Her doctor advised the same thing as yours.

We've already done that. This one is purely internal. I thought that was just the stump not healing correctly, but is it called the same thing ? It does seem logical for one to follow the other, though.

ETA: nothing is coming out of her belly button. It's completely sealed. She just has an innie when calm and an outie when mad.

Hmm...I'm not sure. If it's internal it should be fine though. I would just worry if it was external.

Back in the day they used to tape a silver dollar or quarter over them to help hold them in.

We see peds Mon but I know LO has this too. Because it's not hurting anything I'm trying the above method.

My son has one, he also had a double inguinal hernia. Both the pediatrician and pediatric surgeon (inguinal hernias have to be sugically repaired) weren't worried about the umbelical one - said as long as it's small (and the intestine doesn't become trapped- which is rare in umbelical hernias) it'll close in its own within a year or so. The surgeon said they don't treat them this early because there's a high rate of reoccurrence at this age. Just an FYI he also said that you should never tape them down- he said it's dangerous but I can't remember why

Nothing really to worry about, they almost always go away on their own. My son had one and it went away after a while and now my daughter has one too. Try not to Google and listen to your dr (I'm notorious of doing it too), the internet can turn reading about a skin rash, to your skin may fall off lol
