BFing While Pregnant

To all of my dearest fellow Bfing mammas who have BTDT, please do tell me when/if the pain of nursing while pregnant ends. 10 weeks today and I am still feeling the sore tenderness every time DS starts to nurse. I have never done this since this is my second baby.

TIA! and <3

  • i had horrible nursing aversion (a creepy crawly, awful feeling every time DS nursed), from about 6 weeks to 10 weeks, at which point it got more bearable. i have had nipple soreness on and off, but never super-painful. from what i've heard anecdotally, it does get better for some women at the end of the first trimester-- but every woman is different.

how many times a day is your LO nursing? you might want to just try cutting back the number of sessions per day. we were at 3 when i got pregnant, and cutting DS back to 2 made it much easier for me.

we have a weekly extended breastfeeding check-in thread here on tuesdays, and a few of us are nursing and pregnant as well- you should join us!
  • I couldn't believe the pain, and I had weird hormones that made me frustrated too...I don't know what that was about. And my ms was so bad that I felt like I would puke on her every time. I couldn't take it. So I weaned her the day after her 2nd birthday. She was pretty addicted but we had gone away for the weekend and she nursed all night long both nights. She had been night weaned for 6 months so I knew it was just a comfort thing. But I was falling apart physically. I think I was 10 weeks at that point.

I hope you can make it through if you want to! I know many do!

  • This is a theoretical question, but does anyone know if the subject of tandem nursing and nursing while pregnant was ever studied? I am curious if it is truly beneficial to continue to nurse during pregnancy and thereafter, or if the risks outweigh the benefits and the sensitivity / change in taste / change in output etc..are just the body's way of saying we should stop nursing during pregnancy.

Specifically, I am wondering what the evolutionary benefit is to the sensitivity, aversion, dip in supply that we observe during pregnancy.

i have wondered a fair bit about this myself-- like, if your body is making you recoil from doing something, maybe that means you shouldn't do it. certainly in other mammals weaning is generally quite abrupt and a bit ruthless.

i think the subject has not been studied enough to come to a firm conclusion. it appears that generally nursing while pregnant is not associated with harm to the mother, fetus, or nursling (this is a good summary), but i don't know that it's necessarily being beneficial. after some brief googling, i found a couple of small studies that presented conflicting information- a few said nursing while pregnant does not increase adverse outcomes, while another said it was associated with lower milk production and reduced growth in the newborn. i have also read that it is common in the dairy industry to give cows a break between milking and subsequent pregnancy, as this is associated with better milk yields.

if anyone else has more info on current research, i'd be interested as well.

Thanks for doing all that research! Maybe this should be a totally separate question / topic. I'm hoping someone can shed some more light, but I sure am glad I'm not the only one wondering :)
