2nd Trimester

Midwife says I "feel" further along...

Yesterday I visited the midwife (at 18 weeks and 3 days) and when she was feeling my belly for my uterus, she said I felt like I was 20 weeks. According to my last period, I should be about 20 weeks, but since I was irregular, they did an ultrasound at my first visit and I was only about 7 weeks (1 week and a few days less than I should be according to my pissed period). My due date has been calculated from that initial ultrasound, putting me at 18 weeks and 3 days yesterday. Since my midwife said I "feel" further along...does this mean I could be further along, or just that I have a large baby? :)

Re: Midwife says I "feel" further along...

  • The early ultrasound is more accurate than fundal height. I would stick with that.

  • When I was pregnant with DD I measured (and presumably "felt") further along pretty much the whole time once I hit 18 - 20 weeks. I just had a lot of amniotic fluid that was screwing with the measurements.
  • Stick with the early u/s dating. It's much more accurate than how you "feel". It's also more accurate than later u/s'.

  • Id stick to the u/s. Babies will grow at their own pace. Mine is consistently 3 weeks ahead but my OB still agrees the early u/s are more reliable and my due date shouldn't be changed unless he shows closer to a month ahead.
  • At one point I measured 4 weeks behind and then had a growth spurt of like 5-6 weeks in 2 weeks and now I'm right on track. Babies grow at different rates and fundal height isn't accurate. If there is any concerns on babies size they will send you for a growth scan.
  • I measure and "feel" 29w...My baby is a slightly above average sized 25w.  I am a bit chubby and my uterus likes to lean to one side causing baby to hang out there more, creating the fundal measurement that is a little bigger than expected.

Go by the early u/s dating - it is most accurate.

Something to avoid is changing a due date now to be more along and then get to the end and be fighting the docs off who want to induce b/c you are overdue - when really you might be only 39w or so.

(my kids were 9 & 11 pounders...if we went by later u/s or fundal heights they would have both been evicted well before 39w)
