Favorite Smoothie Concoctions

Happy Tuesday!

Just like a lot of you guys, I'm having a tough time keeping food down. I have found out drinking a smoothie has been a good way to get in some good vitamins and nutrients.

What's your favorite concoction?

Today I did pears, banana, spinach, vanilla Greek yogurt, ice and almond milk. Not too shabby!

Re: Favorite Smoothie Concoctions

  • I usually do the same shake, and I love it. Banana, frozen mixed fruit, spinach or kale, greek yogurt, and orange juice. It's pretty yummy.

  • Canned peaches, fresh mango, ice and almond milk. I used to add vanilla protien powder to it but im not sure if its safe while pregnant so i dont add that anymore and will put vanilla yougurt if i am craving vanilla with it
  • Glad you found something that works!  I just use a banana, some frozen mixed berries, some milk and a few ice cubes.  Plain but it works.  I can't be counted on to keep the house stocked with much more than that.
  • I've got a few random favorites -- this week has been carrot juice, spinach, and half a green apple. Last week was soy milk (c'mon, progesterone!), banana, and vanilla whey powder.

Frozen strawberries, frozen kale, and coconut water with plain whey powder was an old favorite I haven't pulled out yet.

I also have some shakeology mix that I keep thinking I'm going to use, but then I don't because everything I read contradicts the last thing I read about whether or not it's safe to drink during pregnancy.
  • I drink a smoothie every day, just about.  Today was: greek yogurt, kale, papaya juice, banana, raspberries and blackberries.

If it wasn't for my smoothies I wouldn't be getting my leafy greens.  I can't tolerate salad right now.

  • I normally do mango and banana and strawberry with some Greek yogurt. I'd put spinage or kale in it. But the sight of green drinks makes me nauseous. -.-
  • I was just dreaming of a peanut butter and banana smoothie!  I usually put some spinach in mine as well, but I'm out right now :(

I put two cups of kale in my smoothies and they aren't green?  If you have something like raspberries in there with other fruits, mine turns out a reddish color?

  • My husband made me a smoothie last night using fresh strawberries and banana, low fat vanilla yogurt, some milk, sugar, and ice. It's simple. It was delicious.
  • Now all I can think about is this....

    image
  • So far my favorite has been frozen strawberries, a handful of chocolate chips, a handful of baby spinach, vanilla yogurt, and milk.

Today's was also good...frozen strawberries and blueberries, apple juice, vanilla yogurt, and a handful of baby spinach.
  • Right now I'm drinking a smoothie made from frozen strawberries, mandarin oranges, apple juice, and peaces.  I've been making smoothies and then freezing them for later.  It makes mornings easier.

I don't like veggies or greens at all, but I'm going to try to sneak some into the smoothies so I can get those nutrients.  I have spinach, but I'm not sure what to put with it.  Ideas?

  • Anyone making these smoothies in a Vitamix and NOT care for it? I've never heard anyone say they don't love it, and I really want one. We have a well-loved magic bullet, but I want BIGGER, dammit. My MIL has the Nutribullet and I used that, but I feeeeeeel like a Vitamix would be the best thing ever in the whole wide world.
  • @thelittlewriter‌ I bet you could put the spinach in the one you made earlier and not even tell a difference. I was surprised at how little the spinach affects the flavor, if any!
  • I have been doing smoothies too! It is my morning coffee replacement. They have been some combination of frozen fruit (strawberries, mixed berries, pineapple, mango, and bananas, not necessarily all together) with vanilla greek yogurt and either apple juice or orange juice. I've found that I don't need ice at all with the frozen fruit. Oh, and sometimes I add a little oatmeal before blending!

Ok, so the spinach/kale thing... I do like both of those things, but the thought of putting it into a smoothie grosses me out a bit. How much do you guys add? How much do you taste it? Do you remove the ribs from the kale at least?

@thelittlewriter - This. I use my normal recipes but I start by adding a crap-ton of spinach and some liquid and blending that first so that the spinach pieces are super tiny. Then, I make the smoothie as I normally would. At least, that's what I did with my Magic Bullet. With my Vitamix I could put car parts in there and that sucker would grind 'em up like powder.

  • I just bought a nutribullet and love it. I've been doing pineapple, mango, orange, spinach, banana, apple and chia seeds and a little water. Yum.

  • I bought a mini Ninja.  https://www.amazon.com/Ninja-QB900B-Master-Prep/dp/B003XU3C7M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420571953&sr=8-2&keywords=ninja

It works great!  Can barely even see the spinach in mine since it blends it so well.  I add about a handful and can't taste it at all....stems and all!
  • @lebradford‌ I've never used kale but I was always skeptical of spinach and just threw it in one day and didn't even notice the difference. I usually put about 3/4 - 1 cup in there. My only advice is to make sure your blender makes it veryyyyy fine pieces (which most do) or else you might get lots of green stuck in your teeth, ha!
  • Loving all the ideas! I have basically been turned off to anything that's not fruit or ice cream lol. Hopefully this will help me squeeze in some other nutrients.
