Trying to Get Pregnant

*Born to Run Monday/Tuesday*

I didn't see this posted yet today, although I may have missed it amongst all the wacky pregnancy posts today.

This is a weekly thread for runners who are TTC, that is posted on Mondays (I'm a little late posting this today, I know it's Tuesday for some of you already). All who run--or who want to start running--are welcome, regardless of mileage, pace, ability, size, shape, or terrestrial status. This is a place to talk about running while TTC, training, runs, races, gear, recovery, nutrition, and whatever else we can think of.

 >>> Anyone who posts here regularly should feel free to start the thread on Mondays if it seems to be missing. <<<

How were your runs this week?

GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run?

ETA: dang you mobile spacing!

Re: *Born to Run Monday/Tuesday*

  • I put in 3.1 miles on the treadmill tonight.  I sooo prefer running outdoors but it's too cold for that here lately. I want to improve my time a bit, I'm planning to run a 5K on St. Patrick's Day.

GTKY: I'm loving to listen to "Black Betty" when I run lately.  The tempo is perfect! Otherwise, my playlist is usually hip hop/pop.

    Happy running!

  • Yay.. I thought I had just missed the post as well.

This week: I managed to have several pretty good runs even if they were on a treadmill. And was able to end the week with a hilly 14 miler in the cold wind but the sun was glorious!!!

GTKY: Anything with a beat usually just crazy club music. Turn down for what and when the fire starts to burn has been on repeat lately due to my old spin instructor.

  • How were your runs this week? Non existent lol. But now that school has started back up I can get back to the indoor track at my gym and start logging miles. GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run? I had been using Nike+ and one of the songs that came on my phone was New Years Eve by aviicii (sp?) so I usually tap that for a power song on a hill/near the end.

  • How were your runs this week? DH and I joined a gym and went 4 days last week. I also got a heart rate monitor which I love because I love being able to see exactly how many calories I burned. I'm so out of shape though! I restarted the c25k program so that's going pretty well. My goal is to be able to run a nonstop 5k.

GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run? Nothing special just Pandora running station.

  • How were your runs this week?
Rough! I always forget how hard it is to get back into the swing of things after a long break. Yesterday I signed up for a relay marathon via Girls on the Run SoleMates, so I think I'm going to try the C210K program since I'm so out of shape. Having a goal will help keep me motivated!

GTKY: I usually listen to Jay-Z radio on Pandora. I like a lot of the above suggestions though. Might be time to make a Spotify playlist!

Last week I only got in one 5k and one 2.15 miler to ring in the New Year. I totally slacked.

My run last night was foiled by the fact that I only got two hours of sleep. I ate soup and went to bed instead. But I do have spinning tonight and tomorrow it's going to be single digits and snowing nice and hard. Hello snow running! Count me in! We have a dinner for H's work Wednesday too, so I'll be delighted to skip coaching track to run in the snow and eat a catered meal instead.

My new Garmin 920XT shows up today, so I suspect I'll want to do a lot of working out because I desperately want to play with my new toy.

GTKY- Roar and Wake Me Up will always rank high for me. Roar was stuck in my head my entire half Ironman in June and Wake Me Up is just a great song to run to. Right now on my list too is I Lived by One Republic. So fun to run to. I do listen to a lot of club music and pop/rap because of the beat. Anything Pitbull is awesome and 300 Violin Orchestra is up there for me right now too.

How were your runs this week? No runs yet.  I went to the gym last night, but all of the treadmills were taken.  There's no way I'm running outside in this cold weather.  NO. WAY.

GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run?  I have a work-out playlist on my Spotify, but I need to update it.

  • I ran Sunday, hit 4 miles. And yesterday, 4.5 miles. I'll probably take today off since it's 20 degrees outside.

Tuesday UO: I'd much rather run in the heat than the cold.

I actually don't think this is a UO (Not for me at least).  I would so prefer running in 90 degree weather, sweating my ass off - than run in the cold.  Cold makes me cough, it feels hard to breathe!  Bring on the summertime!

  • How were your runs this week? Sunday was my first day running since summer 8-| I have always wanted to be a "runner" as it is such a great workout and you can literally do it anywhere, but I am so not a cardio queen. I LOVE my weights

GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run? hip/hop and zumba beats get me going
  • How were your runs this week? I'm just getting back to running after taking December off. I ran a half marathon in November and then haven't done much running since then. I do go to CrossFit 3x per week...just haven't been running. BUT! I signed up for another half in May so it's time to get back at it. The weather is terrible here today so I'm hitting up the dreadmill after work.

GTKY: I was getting sick of my tired playlists during training for my last half, and starting using the Rock My Run app. I really like it!
  • Ugh, I am not doing well. I feel like I'm getting more out of running shape the more I run. Idk what's going on :( I ran about 3 miles this morning but it was brutal. Everything hurts. Maybe it's my period.

  • How were your runs this week? I ran 3 nights last week on the dreadmill which was my goal. I made it to 5 miles Saturday which I hadn't done since last winter. Then I remembered why I don't do long distance runs.

GTKY: what are some go-to songs on your music playlist that get you pumped for a run? I like listening to the hip hop songs from college. They remind me of a happy time dancing with friends. And also "All About the Bass" came on this week and I got pumped.

  • Awww geez! I knew I was forgetting to do something this week!. *shoulder shrug* maybe next week I will start back
  • I fell and hurt my knee so I haven't ran this week, just walked with my knee brace.
  • kariann12 keep foam rolling. Also, doing some dynamic warm ups and static stretches afterwards should help. How old are your shoes? Are you running in the correct type of shoe for you? My shins and calves always start to hurt and get tight when I'm in need of new shoes.
  • Also better late than never: Runs have been good. Hard going back to work after 3 weeks off (2 of it traveling), but I'm back in a schedule/groove so now I'm getting my hour in 5 days a week. Also...Not lifting for 2 weeks then hitting it hard..... Ouchouchouch. TBH, I do not listen to anything when I run. I listen to loud noises all day (band teacher). I just want some peace and quiet when I run. I jokingly refer to is as moving zen time.
  • Yeah....I'm bumping this thread, so there.  Anyone have any recommendations for running shoes?  I've been getting knee pain, and I have this weird strained feeling on the bottom of my big toe.  I'm thinking I might need new running shoes - ya know, the hole in the top of my shoe didn't clue me into that, but the injuries did  :))  I know it's recommended to go to a running store and have them fit a shoe for you.  I assume that's quite pricey.  Any other recommendations for shoes?  My shoes that have the hole in them are Nike Pegasus.  Maybe I'll look around online to see if I can find a sale....?  Although perhaps Nikes are just as expensive as going to a running store to have a fitting and/or custom shoe of some sort?

I know you don't want to hear it, but if you plan on doing a fair amount of running, and you're already having some pain/injuries, you're going to want to shell out the money to go to a running store and have them fit you. I refused going for almost 2 years, and spent money on numerous pairs of shoes, trying to find ones that didn't hurt my heels. Finally I gave in and went. It would have been cheaper and quicker in the long run to just have them do it and know they fit correctly. Plus, if for some reason you had issues in them, most of those stores have a good return policy and will make it a point to find a shoe that works for you.

    Sorry that was long.
All of this. Go get your feet and gait analyzed and get the right type of shoe. You can always buy online to get a better price afterwards, but your going to waste time, money, and injuries by just randomly trying things.

@kariann12 and @cnf2013 - thanks for the feedback.  So, when you get your foot/gait measured and analyzed, they then suggest a particular brand/make/model of shoe?  Or, is it more complex than that?  Do you mind if I ask how much you spent on your running shoes?

They measure your feet and make you walk back and forth a bunch. I also ran on a treadmill, they video taped my running and then analyzed it that way. Then based on their analysis they recommended the shoes that would work the best for me. I tried on a bunch, did some more running and picked the ones I felt more comfortable with. I think I spent about $120, which I thought for the shoes, analysis, and just the general info you get from their time spent with you, was totally worth it. Plus it helps for future shoe buying and what to look for.

Also, I know I probably could have bough them online for a bit cheaper, but I feel like that's a shitty thing to do. They spent probably over an hour with me, educating me, etc. Plus, I'd rather support our local businesses. Anyway, soap box, I'll get off it. Hope that all helped!
What @kariann12 said. They'll do a full analysis and fill you in on how your form and gait work. The place I went to last time, when I went back a second time, tried to push inserts on me, which kind of turned me off and is why I ended up buying online that time around instead. I've bought from the shoe store before, for sure but my feeling is that if you need tons of add ons and inserts then they aren't the right shoe for you.

Honestly, now, I run triathlon specific shoes, even for all my just running training and racing. I switched for tri season this past year and love them so much I haven't been able to find another running shoe that works as well for me. I generally buy last season colors for about $80, but I've spent as much as $130 on new running shoes. If you find some you love you can buy like three or four pairs for really cheap online when the new models come out in February. It's worth it if you can run pain free.
