Cloth Diapering

Catch me up with the latest and greatest CDs?

Hey ladies! I used to be a frequent poster on this board a few years ago (under a different SN--had to get this one until we announce this pregnancy). It was so helpful, and I cloth diapered my son until 1 week before his 3rd birthday when he PTed.

I had a mix of diapers from Bumgenius pockets, to Twinkie Tush and BuBuBeBe fitteds for overnight, to sustainablebabyish snapless fitteds, GMD prefolds, etc. It was really a little bit of everything.

This go-around we're on a stricter budget, so I've been browsing resale groups and boards and thinking ahead about what to get.

Since I'm now a full-time SAHM I think the bulk of our stash will be prefolds and fitteds with covers. I saved some prefolds from DS but they're bigger, so they probably won't fit this baby until about 1 year old or so.

What fitteds (WAHM or mass-produced, just looking for affordability) would you recommend? I want something all natural, no hidden microfiber layer or anything like that. Also, I've only ever used cotton prefolds. Are bamboo better for overnight or something?

Anything new and great that's come out in the last year that I should check out?

Thanks in advance! I'm so excited to have another squish in cloth. With DS we started at 8 days old. With this baby, the plan is to start at birth.

  • I really like my GMD workhorses for my newb.

  • Congrats on the pregnancy! I also loved GMD workhorses for the newborn days. And flats with Best Bottom covers or inside BG 4.0s is pretty great too for after the newborn stage.

  • For those of you who mention GMD workhorses for the newborn stage, I know they'll resell pretty well, but how long did they fit your kiddos and how big were your kids? Just trying to get a frame of reference. DS was 8 pounds even at birth but didn't regain his birthweight until 3 weeks old. We used Kissaluvs size 0 with him and I think they only lasted about a month to 6 weeks. Is it about the same with GMD workhorses, or more or less?

Also, can you start from the beginning with small GMD workhorses, or are the NBs necessary?

    Thanks!

  • Another vote for GMD prefolds and fitteds (workhorses).

  • Snapless/closureless workhorses will last longer than snaps. I think it's pretty baby specific, but the NB will probably fit until somewhere in the 10-12 pound range.

The GMD website has some good info about skipping sizes. If I'm remembering right they say you can skip NB and start with small (once their thighs chunk up a bit) but they recommend using NB and making them stretch till mediums fit.

I have cotton and bamboo prefolds. The bamboo do hold more than cotton, but I still need a hemp doubler for ON on my toddler. So in hindsight I should have saved the money and just gotten cotton and more doublers. You might be able to get away with just a bamboo prefold for naps though.

  • My baby was 7 pounds 11 ounces at birth. She still fits in her snapless newborns now at 6 weeks, but not for much longer. The snapless smalls just started fitting her in the past week or two. She was swimming in them before that.

  • N fit well in the snapless NB workhorses until she was 8 weeks but at that point she was 13.5 pounds. Now 2 weeks later we can still snappi them but the fit of the front flap is questionable.

  • Can I jump in & ask a question about the workhorses? How many Newborn fitteds would make a good stash? Also, the price seems great, but won't the cost of diaper covers really drive up the total price? How many covers are needed? Thanks!!

I did prefolds and covers for the nb period and only had 6covers......but then I was washing daily because I didn't have enough nb prefolds to go eod so 6 was fine for me. If I had to do it over again I would have had a minimum of 8-10 covers and double the number of prefolds (I had 18-24 depending on which week we're talking about)

36 changes is the normally recommended number if you are washing EOD. For the NB stage we had 24 prefolds, 6 NB workhorses, 3 AIOs, and 3 pockets. We used the prefolds during the day and the workhorses and pockets for overnight changes. We rarely used the AIOs because they didn't fit her well. But we learned what we liked and didn't like. Plus, workhorses are OK at handling NB poop but prefolds really are better at it. Plus they're cheaper and really not that hard to use (that was my fear).

You can get covers at really reasonable prices if you buy them as seconds. Check out the Thirsties outlet and the clearance section of the Blueberry page. I have both brands as seconds and I can't find anything wrong with them.

  • ^^^Thanks!! How long were you able to use all of that? It seems like a lot for such a short time.

You don't need to buy a cover for every prefold/flat/fitted you have.

You may not NEED to buy a cover for every prefold/flat/fitted but you will be tempted to just because cd buying is addicting.
