Torn abdominal muscles

So I had a midwife appointment today. I told her that my stomach has been tender for months and is getting worse. I also get like stabbing pains. I chalked it up to an active baby. So she had me lie down and tense my stomach, as if performing a crunch. Well come to find out, my muscles are really seperated right down the middle of my abdomen. Plus my abdomen is torn on both sides of my belly button. She said it will heal on its own, but I won't feel relief until the baby dropped. Has anyone gone through this? Does it get better once baby drops? Did your muscles heal on their own? This is my second baby and I figured my muscles were already stretched and good to go lol.

Re: Torn abdominal muscles

  • I haven't had that but wanted to say I'm sorry for your pain! I can relate just a hair, I have pulled muscles in my rib cage currently from coughing so much and everytime I breathe it feels like knives. I can't imagine what yours feels like. Hope you get some relief soon.

I haven't experienced this but wanted to send my support. Hope you can get relief somehow.

I have heard there are exercises to do and some to avoid post baby to help.
  • Isn't this diastassis recti? OP sorry you are dealing with this. I had a mild form last time, no pain at all but I could tell that something was off wIth the way belly looked post partum I have heard from others that they had good results from physical therapy after delivery.

  • So sorry to hear this; however this is not abnormal. It's sounds like you have Diastasis Recti, which is when there is a gap between your left and right rectus abdominal muscles. In a certified pre and post natal fitness trainer/instructor and I have helped many moms recover from this postpartum. I have a blog post on the topic with pictures indicating how to help it after pregnancy at www.runningonfoodandfaith.com. In the meantime, try to pull your belly button into your spine each time you bend over and especially when you are lifting something
  • and always roll to your side when getting out of bed, using your chest and arm muscles to pull you up rather than sitting straight up. This will help prevent it from worsening :)
  • Hehe yes I posted about this a while ago. I started noticing it at 23 weeks.
  • OMG my post got cut. Nutshell - PP's said it well. "Torn" is a seriously not cool word! Separate is way better, otherwise you feel helpless & broken. My MW said not to worry. Cat/cow exercises to strengthen transverse abs + anything @luckystarz‌ has. Agree w/ using arms to get up/out of bed. Argh I'm so angry!
  • I've heard of the middle muscles separating. Just not your abdominal wall tearing. Which I have both. I'm glad I finally know why I'm in pain. On the plus side, only 11 weeks left lol. My midwife didn't give me suggestions or workouts. She just said it will heal on its own. Which is good. I appreciate all the kind words and support. I didn't think this would happen, considering I gained 70 pounds with my first and had no issues. I've only gained 13 pounds with this one. I guess that's why they say every pregnancy is different lol.
  • Do a search for Diastasis recti on this board - you'll find the previous posts where those of us who've had it have discussed it. I do know it's been a while.

  • I will. Thank you. I wasn't sure if it was discussed. My phone is old and slow.
  • My mother had this when she delivered my twin sister and I. It has never healed. :((((. My twin sister also had twins and had a very similar experience; although, not as severe as my mothers. She will be having surgery soon to repair her separated stomach muscles. I wish you the best!!! Definitely do what you can to minimize this getting any worse before delivery.
