Why is The Dude napping so poorly?

I need ideas.

Lately A has been taking terrible naps at DC. When he went down to two naps they were usually 1 hour - 1.5 each. The last several weeks he is taking one short morning nap, usually no longer than 45-50 minutes. Some days this results in a really crabby guy, other days he seems perfectly fine even though he's been up since around noon, and we've moved up his bedtime a little as a result. I suspect it's too loud in the infant room and that's why he is waking when he is. He does have two molars coming in on the bottom, but I don't suspect that's an issue ATM, because he is eating like he has a hollow leg and his teachers report he is having perfect days other than the short nap. Pete is going to talk to the morning teacher and Director tomorrow to see if noise is the problem, but if it is, what can really be done? I would ask if they can wait until after lunch and let him nap with the toddlers but I'm sure that wouldn't work because of ratios. Is this something we just have to suffer through until he transitions?

Re: Why is The Dude napping so poorly?

  • G didn't nap well at daycare until he moved to the toddler room. He did, however, spend time there including naps before he officially transitioned. I suspect he was ok to nap there because he was on one nap a day.
I think in my state there are different ratio rules when toddlers are asleep (or I'm remembering incorrectly) but it's definitely worth looking into!

The last month G was in the infant room I had to be persistent that they keep him on a schedule. It helped, but their typical relaxation on schedules that's great for infants (feed when hungry, sleep when tired) is not so great for toddlers.

    I hope it improves!

Would they let you use a travel size white noise machine? He could have it right next to him while he naps?

He has a little Sleep Giraffe that times out after 45 minutes, but maybe that's an idea. I could ask them to start it again as it approaches 45 minutes? I don't know how reasonable it is to expect that when they're busy with other kids that are awake, but it may be worth a shot. They have to check on the sleeping babies every 15 minutes, so maybe it's not that ridiculous considering they'll be stopping by his crib periodically anyway.

I don't think it's a dull roar so much as kids screeching, as A likes to do also, and if that's the case I'm not sure how well it would work at drowning them out.

Is it possible he is waking up hungry? When V dropped from 2 naps to 1, we had to play with her meal/snack times in order to make sure she wasn't sleeping too short of a time. She is more of a grazer, but if for some reason she doesn't eat right before her nap, its pretty much cut in half.

I would doubt it. He is a very big eater. He has a little something around 6:45, then breakfast at about 8, then a pretty decent snack with some milk at 10. He usually goes down for his nap around 10:30 or 11.
  • @klongoria11‌ Yes, he's ready for one nap. On the weekends with us he just does one nap, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours, regardless of when we put him down.
  • You might talk to the dc teachers then to see if they can work with the schedule. When do they graduate him to the toddler room?

They used to do it between 15-18 months, now they refuse to move any until 18 months.

@CFox815‌ I really hope so. He just fell asleep while he was eating dinner. My kid does not just fall asleep. It's been bad since late November but steadily growing worse. Today was 11:40-12:15. And I'm sure that time doesn't start when he falls asleep because there is no way they sit there watching him roll around and chew his blanket until he passes out. If he is able to get himself to sleep, it usually takes 10-15 minutes.

DD started napping poorly all of a sudden around 11 months so we tried going down to 1 nap a day and that seemed to do the trick. Now she consistently naps 1.5-2 hours a day. If he's napping fine at home though, number of naps doesn't seem to be the problem. Might be just a phase, hope it passes quickly for you.

  • Can you talk to DC about maybe using a cot instead of a crib? Once Layla started sleeping on a cot her DC naps improved greatly. I think it is because she can immediately settle in and go to sleep on her tummy which she loves. In cribs our DC has to put them back to sleep.

Sorry that you guys are going through this; it is so tough. I agree that he is ready to transition to one nap, it is unfortunate that they dont move any kids to the one nap until 18 months, are the other kids all taking two naps? Hopefully Pete's chat with the Director helps and you guys can get to a solution.
They will move him to one nap, it's just that for some reason that one nap is getting cut way short.
There were a couple days last week when he napped after lunch, and it wasn't much better. There is another girl in his class a couple weeks older than him and she is on one nap, I'm not sure about the other kids but I believe they are probably still taking two. They do have one boy that is older than 18 months still in the infant room and I would assume he is also down to one, but I'm not sure. I don't know everything that goes on with him of course, but he seems to not be doing well enough developmentally to transition to the toddler room yet.

@chrisy_01 they just respond to his sleep cues. Most days he is ready to sleep around 10:30 - 11, but if he is not slowing down they will wait. He has gotten pretty good about letting everyone know he is tired. At home he runs to the bottom of the stairs (his room is on the second floor) and says, "Up." His DC teacher says he goes over to the door that divides the sleeping area from the play area to tell them when he's ready for a nap.

Has his pooping schedule changed? Is he waking up to go? Elliot does that a lot. Sometimes we say not to give him his morning nap until just after otherwise it is a fight for sleep or very short.
He is a very routine oriented little dude, even when it comes to pooping. He usually goes around 8 - 8:30 and again around 5:30. Very rare for him to have a midday movement.
  • I'm no help, but I totally feel your pain.  This past weekend LO took one nap each day... the longest time 30 minutes... 30!!!! And then DH left for the afternoon saturday and I was alone with the little terror!!!  :'(

Hugs. LO sleeps better at DC... He had about an hour nap yesterday, but it was his first time on the cot so I expect that to take some getting used to...
