Sleep regression and fussiness @ 9-10 mos

Our kiddo hits 10 mos on 01/02/15, and this past month has been a trial. We had a baby who took two 2-hour naps a day and slept 12 hours a night like clockwork for 4 months. But at 9 mos, wow, what happened to our baby? He's super fussy, wakes in the middle of the night and complains for 1-2 hours. Some days he is very difficult to console, sort of complaining and whining regardless of toys, entertainment, etc. Some days he'll take one 45 min nap and that's it. I've read a few articles on the 8-10 month sleep regression/fussiness issues. I'm not convinced it's teething, because his teeth really don't seem to bother him - he doesn't stick his hands in his mouth or drool very much. Is anyone else dealing with this? How are you pushing through?

  • Sounds like teething to me.
  • I also think it sounds like teething.

Be grateful for the past 4 months of good sleep.

  • Wonder weeks, growth spurts, teething. They are going through constant changes and they don't all feel so great.

  • Ours is teething and if I give him a little advil before bed he does fine. If I don't he is up 2-13 times being fussy.

  • We have the same EXACT thing going on except he also fusses with at least one bottle per day too.  I think he is teething though and I'm pretty sure it's the top front tooth (maybe both).  But I was also concerned that maybe it was his AR kicking back up (we recently changed meds from Zantac to Omeprozole).  So your posting was perfect timing...I was about to lose my mind.  Sorry I'm no real help but I feel your pain.

  • We are going through the same thing though I think it's also teething added in as well as reaching milestones. She is constantly pulling up and cruising now and wants to do this in her crib all night long. I hope she gets over the novelty soon!

We've been struggling a bit lately as well. She was sleeping completely through the night without even a paci replacement, then suddenly for multiple nights she will start crying hysterically in the middle of the night. She doesn't seem hungry, and in the beginning all it would take is going in, rubbing her back, and giving her a paci to make her pass out again. However two nights ago she would be OK once I came in and rubbed her back, but then would start crying hysterically again as soon as I closed the door to her room. I ended up having to take her out of the crib over to the rocking chair and rock/sing to her until she settled down and seemed drowsy. (Her breathing was shaky like she was scared.) Last night, even rocking wouldn't work so I had to give a bottle to settle her. Not sure if it is night terrors, reflux (we did have some acidic/spicier food for dinner the last 2 nights so I made something very basic tonight to see if it makes a difference), or what, but I feel bad for her :( Fingers crossed it will pass soon and she'll back to her old self.

  • on fussy nights with these signs :
    • drool
    • fingers in mouth
    • gnawing continuously on toys

we give her motrin and it seems to really help.
