Moving, need advice

So DH and I are finally moving the end of next week! We've been waiting for this for a while and I'm excited/nervous for it now. But I need advice from anyone who has moved with a LO, or just thoughts on different things.

First, DDs new room will be much further away in the new house. Far enough I have considered putting her in our room (our new master is huge and easily accommodates DDs crib and rocking chair in addition to all our furniture). Do I put her in our room or her own room and just invest in a baby monitor? I don't want to start a bad habit by having her in our room, but I'm nervous to have her so far away. I was afraid to put her in her own room in the crib when we first brought her home, but we did and it worked out great. So it is something I need to just suck it up and get used to it again? She's only waking up once, sometimes 2 times a night so I wonder if having her in our room would wake her up more because of the increased noise from me and DH.

Second, in all the hectic mess of moving, what can I do to keep life for DD as normal as possible? I'm determined to still have her bedtime routine the same and in bed by her normal time even the day we move. But other than that, what can I do? I'm afraid this will completely mess her up. She usually sleeps just fine any nights she has stayed with grandparents (2 times) or the few times we stayed at my parents, but that's only ever been for 1 night. Is being in a new house going to mess her up for a while?

Any other advice or thoughts about moving with a LO are appreciated. Packing is going a lot more smoothly than I anticipated with DD which is one less headache I had anticipated!

Re: Moving, need advice

  • We moved at the beginning of November, right before my daughter was 3 months.  It was a hectic day, but we all made it out alive.  My mom watched her while H and I moved.  She was fine for naps and had no problem going to bed that night.  Just make sure all of the baby's stuff is unpacked and settled first and you should be ok.

  • And congratulations on moving!  We waited 5 months after purchasing our home, I know how excited you are!
  • We sold our home and moved when I was 5 months pregnant... We bought again and will move when he's 5 months old... Didn't look forward to it then and dreading it again.... Making sure the house is warm and his room is ready is my priority... Hubby can worry about the rest!
  • We are moving from VA to CA next week. Our house was packed last week and we are staying with my parents until next Friday. I've just been keeping both kids' routines the same and they haven't had any issues so far. Talk to me again after the 3 hour time change....

  • Congrats on the new house!! I think that your DD is little enough that she won't really notice a difference and will adjust better than you think. They are really adaptable at this age. If you aren't crazy about having your LO in your room I would invest in a video monitor. My parents gave us one when I had DS along with an extra camera for DD's room. It has given me a lot of peace of mind so I wish we would have invested in one when DD was a baby.
  • Congrats on the new house!  I haven't moved with a LO before, but I would keep her in her own room at this point.  I just think it would be harder to move her to her own room the older she gets.  Get a video monitor to ease your mind.  We finally got DD transitioned to her crib in her own room and it was terrible. I wouldn't ever wish that on anyone.  Good luck with the move!

  • Thanks for all the thoughts ladies! I found a video monitor I plan to buy (which earned me an eye roll from DH) and plan to put DD in her own room. I figure I can always change if I have to.
Good idea about the smells! I think I'll actually just keep all her stuff made since it will be moved directly in the new house, so I won't even unmake her crib to keep the current smell for a while.

I'm excited to get to the new house and start this new life!
