OK, where to start troubleshooting?

Grr leaked through 4 diapers/outfits on Friday. Daycare was so frustrated (and he was running out clothes) that they put him in a disposable. I think his little bladder is starting to hold more, and then he's peeing too fast to absorb it. I think all the leaking daycare diaper pockets are MF inserts.

At home we typically use Best Bottoms w organic inserts and don't usually have an issue. Once in a while though he has a leak (usually we didn't quite tuck the pad).

I have several thirsties doublers I can use, and also have a ton of GMD prefolds in newborn and medium I could use to stuff pockets with. I'm just not sure what to do, as I am not duplicating the issue. And daycare usually changes/checks his diaper every 2 hours or so unless he's napping. He's starting to have more dry diapers when they check, but then I bet the next one is a soaked one.

For daycare I have a mixed bunch of diapers - BG 4.0, some China cheapies I bought on Craigslist before i knew anything about diapers (these are the main leaky ones), some Kawaii P&N. I have one Lalabye and one Blueberry simplex.

So basically should I start trying to add absorbency, or adjust the rise, or what? He's 5.5 months old and pretty little. Maybe 14 lbs. We are considering buying a few more BB diapers and just switching to all BB for daycare. (Mister has a strong preference for BB.)

I would start by asking them to show you how they put a diaper on and check to make sure there are no leg gaps. I found this video very helpful

You also might try pairing a hemp doubler with your MF. It's usually a pretty effective solution for a lot of people, and still pretty trim.

When you say that you're not duplicating the issue at home do you mean that the diapers you normally use at home are not leaking or the pockets as used at daycare are not leaking while at home?

I agree with asking them to show you how they put the diaper on. My MIL has been watching my girls and changing cloth for over 2 years now and still constantly puts them on wonky and gets leaks.

If you know the cheapie diapers are the main offender, maybe replacing them is a good idea. BG 4.0s stuffed with flats has been a pretty solid solution for us.

We mainly use BB at home, and we don't usually have leak issues. So I don't know if I should start using the daycare ones at home and see where leaks are coming from, evaluate my wash routine, adjust the fit on his diapers, or what... I really think we are close to ditching the China cheapies completely.

I would try using the daycare ones exactly as they are when you send them to daycare just to see what you experience. You might notice what the issue is and be able to fix it and then tell daycare how to fix if needed....or you might confirm the CC diapers are worthless. Either way a little information from the diapers themselves can't hurt.

I'd ditch the microfiber.

Use the prefolds (mediums) and spread them in the pockets so that they cover the entire area to be filled.

I found that sometimes I had issues with pockets where the inserts would shift.

And send one type of diaper to try out. Make sure they are putting them on properly. And show them how to test for gaps. Send a picture of the proper fit if necessary.

Oh and I did at least check the PUL to make sure it wasn't crapping out on me. It looked good.

Double check the elastic. I didn't notice it until I bought a new diaper how badly my 4.0 elastic had relaxed for 1 1/2 years of use.

Oh, skip the medium prefolds. I didn't notice he was 5 months old. Add a newborn prefold to your microfiber and see if that fixes it.

How are they checking to see if his diapers are still dry? If the pockets are stay-dry and they are just poking at the back of the insert (which doesn't get wet as fast as the front with boys usually) they may be missing the wetness. I would probably have them change him every two hours, regardless.

I have a few disposables I keep in his bag for emergencies. I have a paranoia he's going to run out of diapers.

That's a good point. I used to feel the top of ds2's BB inserts and think they were dry then it dawned on me stay dry lining of course it feels dry.....so even if they're feeling the front of a pocket it may feel dry with the lining. (I did learn to feel the under side of the inserts)
