Baby Names

Please help us decide!

Hi Ladies,

I've been lurking here for awhile and love your stance on names.  I need your help on deciding.  DH and I are team green, but have chosen names for a boy and a girl that we love.  We are still slightly on the fence though with both for some reason, but we really adore them.  So, we also have some backups.  Could you give your opinion on the two names that are front runners or let me know if you like the backups better?  I am also up for any other suggestions. Especially boys!

The boys name is a family name, both FN and MN

Front runners:
boy - Theodore James nn Theo
girl - Colette Belle

Back ups
girl - Evangeline, Eva, Violet
boy - Lucas Paul (the only name I still love, but it's definitely rising in popularity)

Thank you!

Re: Please help us decide!

  • All great names!!! Love Theodore James, but I actually like all three of your back up girl names more than the front runner. Colette is still a good name but I prefer the others, especially Evangeline

  • Theodore James is perfect.

I prefer Cosette to Colette. Evangeline is the best on your list, but Eva and Violet are lovely, too.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • Thanks so much, ladies.

I am definitely going to rethink Colette and talk to DH about it. Cosette is gorgeous too. I appreciate the responses!

Would you pronounce Evangeline, Evange- LEEN or LIN? Or could it be either?
  • Love your boy name!! But I agree, I like all your girl runner ups better. I would say Evangeline ending with -een, but I'm no expert!!

  • I like Theodore James.

I love Colette, but it feels clumsy with Belle.  Corinna maybe?

My second pick for you is Eva.

Evangeline is pretty, but it's a little frilly for my personal taste.  Violet is nice, but also don't love it with Belle.

  • I would go with Leen as well.

Thanks again, this has been super helpful.

I agree with you.  I was using Belle because of family meaning, plus I love the name, but it really didn't flow perfectly. Maybe that's why I wasn't 100% sold with Colette.  Any MN suggestions? I'd really love to use my mother or grandmothers name, but neither go with Colette or our last name, which is super common and one syllable.
  • LOVE the boy name. I think the girl's name is also very pretty, but I do prefer Evangeline.
  • Love Theo, for girl I would use Eva Belle.

  • Love Theodore James for a boy!

I also think Colette is the best girl name you have on your list because it's feminine and sweet and not very popular right now so it stands out. Although it doesn't pair well with Belle, in my opinion. Maybe try Grace, Rose, Elizabeth, or Renee.

Evangeline is not my style at all and has become way too popular lately. Violet is also very popular as of late but I do like it better than Evangeline.

Eva is a good choice, a bit more classic than the others. In fact, I'd pair it with Colette... Eva Colette!

My DD's middle name is Pearl, and we get tons of compliments on it.

Also suggesting Faye, Gail, Bliss, Renee, Nicole, Ruby

Eva Colette is lovely.  I'll definitely put that on the list!

I had no idea that Evangeline was becoming popular.  I'll have to consider that too.

It's such a great, strong and classic name!
  • I love Violet Evangeline, Evangeline Violet, Evangeline Pearl and Cosette Pearl
  • Front runners are on point.
    I love violet too.

    For your front runner names

    I LOVE Colette
  • I agree that I'm not crazy about Cosette in LM, but I just love the name. For some reason Colette makes me think of toothpaste. I'm not really sure why. I guess because of Colgate? Which makes no sense. Haha.

  • Love Theodore James. Love Colette but not with Belle.
  • I love Theo and Violet!

  • Thanks again everyone!! Such great suggestions/advice.  I am dying over the Colette / Colgate/colonoscopy association.  Never thought of it.

Turns out DH likes Evangeline a lot more than Colette, but thought I preferred Colette so he was just going with it.  I feel like this is going to be a game time decision in the end.

You girls were great.  Gave me lots to think about!
