LO's who aren't gaining weight & sleep question

LO was born 8.6 and gained well the first 2 wks. After his first 2 wks it went down hill and has struggled with gaining weight. He was EBF up until 1 month ago and we started supplementing with formula. That being said he still wakes up about 3 times a night to nurse...

I don't let him CIO unless he just got put down but if he wakes up 2 hrs later I nurse him every time...

I'm wondering if doing this will create "bad habits" and he will need his 3 MOTN feedings or it's just until he is doing better with his weight gain.

He is only in the 9th percentile and I'm hoping he gets up there fast... Is anyone else dealing with something similar to this? If so are you just going with it like me?

Re: LO's who aren't gaining weight & sleep question

  • DD is in the 6th percentile. Pedi is unconcerned, says she's just going to be petite so we haven't changed anything and still EBF.

This has been touched on a lot recently, but I think you've just got to roll with the waking up and MOTN feedings. I think every LO is different and will get to the STTN phase at their own pace. I nurse DD anytime she wakes up too because I know that's what she wants, and I think 4 months old is too young to start denying her what she wants/needs to go back to sleep.

  • My girl is not even on the charts for weight, so our pedi says to continue to let her nurse as often as she wants at night. I do the same as you. I let her cry a little for bedtime and now she goes to sleep so easily. Whenever she wakes up (2 times a night usually but occasionally 3) we nurse and I put her back down awake but she never cries. I don't think it's creating bad habits. I actually think it will be helpful that she knows how to go to sleep when the time comes to drop the feedings. All I know us I can't deny her food, but I knew our bedtime routine needed help, so this is working for us!

  • I always nurse in the middle of the night.  Later, when they are older and just comfort nursing, then I'll start introducing other comfort methods, like just rocking, but I never refuse to nurse if they're hungry.  This is how I've handled all three.  Each has found their own time to stop waking up.  DD1 didn't until I recently started taking her to chiro (4 and no she wasn't still nursing).  DD2 stopped by 18 months.  DD3 is already a better sleeper than the first 2, so I'm looking forward to my nights in a year or so.
