Baby monitors

Will you use a baby monitor? I thought a baby monitor was a standard every day product when having a baby. Turns out they seem to be so controversial. My friendship group is so pro or so anti monitors. Most anti saying you jut get up or listen out.

I've been given the angel care with the pads but friends are saying they wouldn't even use the sound monitor

Re: Baby monitors

  • I think it depends how big your house is. We have a fairly small centralised home so doubt I would get one. If it seems like I'm not hearing baby's cry then I'll get one. Doesn't seem like a must for me personally. Do what makes you feel comfortable

  • We probably won't get one right away, as we have a pretty small apartment. I have nannied for families with sound monitors, and I find them useful especially if kiddo is a few rooms away. I like that with a monitor, I hear them fuss before they cry, and I can decide if it'll be easier to go in right then and help them get back to sleep instead of waiting, calming them down, then helping them sleep. Then even if I do wait, I'm usually there ASAP once the crying starts, so it's easier to calm them down.

  • We won't use one as we are bed sharing and cosleeping. So it isn't necessary for us.

  • We got a video monitor with DS. We will get a 2nd camera for our monitor for this LO. I lived being able to look at the monitor and look for the rise/fall of breathing. It also helped if he was making noise/stirring to check and see what was up instead of immediately going into his room and waking him up if he was still sleeping. I still use it at 17 months.

I am with you on the video monitor. At first the baby will probably be in the room with me set up next to the bed but during the day he/she will be in there own room napping and after a while at night sleeping in there as well and I like the idea of being able to see if the baby Is just tossing in it's sleep or actually waking up, being able to see that it's ok without getting out of bed and opening the door and possibly waking the baby up. My best friend just had her 3rd baby and this was her first video monitor and she said it's awesome and so much easier then possibly waking them up going to check on them all the time.
  • Thanks I almost felt as though I was being neglectful by having one
  • Definitely getting a video monitor of some sort (maybe something that has a phone app). Our house isn't large, but I'd rather be able to see on a monitor whether the baby is breathing and/or sleeping than risk waking him/her up by walking in.

Also, I plan to use it when we travel and visit the in-laws. A sound monitor would probably work just as well, but I think I'm going to be a crazy FTM who needs to constantly make sure the baby is breathing so I'm going for the upgrade.

  • We will be downloading a video IPod/iPad app. It allows you to place an apple product in the nursey and watch from any apple device. I'll be working from home a few days after maternity leave so it'll be a necessary. Also, we have a camper and plan to take baby camping as soon as we feel comfortable. Love the idea of the video so we'll feel comfortable when's baby's sleeping inside and we're by the fire.
  • We have a friend that is about done with her video monitor and is giving it to us so we'll have that.  We would have purchased at least a sound monitor on our own though because we have 2 story home and all the bedrooms are upstairs so baby will be up there sleeping and it can be hard to hear from downstairs.
  • A baby monitor is an absolute must for me once my babies are out of our room. I own a simple graco one (https://www.gracobaby.com/products/pages/secure-coverage-digital-monitor.aspx) and love it. I also have a summer infant one for when I watch a little girl because she naps downstairs, but it doesn't have as good reception as my graco.

I can't understand people not using a monitor unless you leave doors open and can hear baby from your room. I use it even for my toddler because I like to have his door closed so that he sleeps better.

  • We only had a sound monitor for DS and wish we would have paid a little extra for the video monitor for peace of mind and knowing when he was just fussing or when he was really crying.  We will be getting a video monitor with two cameras this time around.

  • We're just going to get a simply audio monitor. Neither one of us was interested in the video one. But once we move the baby to their room, we'll be on different floors, so the audio will be good to have.

  • We used a video and loved it, so will be doing that again.  Our son was so noisy and cried out (and talked) in his sleep.  So it was nice to have to see if we needed to go in there or if he was asleep without waking him by going in.  (Seriously last night he screamed out "No not THAT book!")

It was also helpful for marathon naps/sleeping in during those early days.  When you worry that maybe something happened.  You could look at the video monitor and see the rise and fall of the chest and know he was just asleep.

  • We have 2 video monitors.  I don't know how people live with out them, LOL.  It's so nice to know what's going on in there without having to go in the room.

I doubt we'll get a third though.  It will probably be time to take it out of DD1s room soon enough.  And since the baby will be in our room at first, that buys us some time, at least a year from now probably.

Couldn't have made it without the video monitor on the first.  I'll be adding a second camera for this baby.  I also have a severe hearing loss so a monitor is absolutely critical for me.

Our video monitors don't run off wifi, so they can't be hacked from the internet.  There could be interference, if someone close by had the same monitor, but that is not very likely as ours lose the signal just going out to the back yard - we're on almost an acre so, someone couldn't be like sitting in the street interfering with the monitor, the signal wouldn't be strong enough.

ETA to fix a word and add clarification.

  • I have a video monitor and still use it with DD.  Mine expands up to 4 camera so we have a second camera for this one.  We sleep with the bedroom doors shut so we would have a hard time hearing.  I'm sure I will be very glad we still have it when we transition DD to her new room and big girl bed.  I know it had been done for generations but I can't imagine not knowing what is going on in my child's room.  When she was very little I could tell if DD was really awake or just fussing in her sleep.  I think it helped her STTN better because I wasn't going in for every noise she made.

  • DS was in the same room as us for 8 months so rarely used one then. His room is directly across the hall from ours, maybe 2 feet, and we've always heard him. We only use the monitor when staying at other people's places and in the evenings H and I hang out in our basement to watch movies/tv whatever so we have it hooked up down there in case he wakes up. He's generally a solid sleeper though.
  • I'm late to the game on this, but just wanted to add that I also love my video monitor. It's hands down the most useful thing I bought for my LO and I will be getting another camera for when LO #2 arrives. My DS is a noisy sleeper so I love being able to see what's going on before I make the call to get out of bed and go into his room. For naps it's great too, particularly in the spring/summer time. I could go out into our yard and still be able to hear and see him.

It was useful for my DH since I occasionally travel overnight for work. My DH can sleep through a bomb going off so without a monitor with volume control he'd never wake up to LO crying!
