My theory is anyone who doesn't know they are pregnant must have a combination of already having lots of health issues where symptoms of pregnancy don't stand out to them, AND they squeeze by with little morning sickness or other major tell tale signs. It's the only explanation I can come up with.
My co-worker did not know until 20 weeks with her third. She had just returned from maternity leave with her second and was breast feeding and hadn't got her cycle back. She finally went to the doctor because she was mistaking kicks for stomach issues.
My aunt who just had a baby in September didn't know until 20ish weeks. She has always had irregular long cycles. She said her longest cycle was 5 months between periods. With all of her 5 babies she only had slight food aversions as a symptom.

Sort of unrelated; my mom didn't know she was pregnant with twins. Neither did her doctor. This was back in the early 70's. She was a young mother and it was her first pregnancy. They never did an ultrasound and to make matters worse, her doctor kept hounding her for gaining so much weight.
Low and behold on the devliery table out came my identical twin sisters. She made it to 38/39 weeks too.
Some women have anterior placentas which forces the baby towards the back and also makes feeling movement much harder, especially if you don't know you are pregnant. It's easy to dismiss some symptoms for people who have regular health issues. I'm not sure that I believe that so many women haven't known (like enough to make a tv series!!!), but do believe it happens under rare circumstances! I would never have known I was pregnant with any of my pregnancies had I not missed my period. I've never had any symptoms of pregnancy.
I don't understand how one doesn't know they are pregnant, but this recently happened to someone I know. She went to the hospital for stomach pain and the doctor told her she was in labor. She apparently had her period the whole time. It just baffles me!
I work in the Emergency room and those kinds of stories happen all the time. Often they have a history of irregular cycles and don't think anything of not having their period for months ( not abnormal for them.) They usually come in for severe abdominal pain or they come in after having delivered the baby at home- having had no clue.

This happened last year to a girl on my wedding month board. She posted the while story including going to the ER with "cramps" and coming home with a baby. I was TTCAL and not amused by the story.

This happened to my coworker. She had recently lost 100 lbs ams went to the doctor after missing several periods. The doctor just said it was due to weight loss and sent get on her way. She gained a little weight back, but thought it was just die to slipping in her diet. Her dad finally convinced her to take a test at home because she was having stomach pains. She was in her 7th month (I'm pretty certain that's how far along she was) at that point in time and her son ended up being born 2 weeks later. He is surprisingly healthy!
I saw an episode where a woman had every symptom in the book. She gained weight too, but it wasn't until she started leaking milk that she realized something was amiss. She made an appointment, but went into labor that night.
If I was having unprotected sex and had wonky periods, I'd probably be POAS every week, haha.
That said, there is NO WAY I could not know this time around that I was prego....too many horrible symptoms.

My SIL didn't know until she was 16 weeks pregnant. It was really scary for her because she had been drinking and smoking the whole time. Turns out baby boy has some serious issues and will be born some time this month.
This happened to a friend who was healthy, active, and not overweight. She had irregular periods and the doctor discovered it at 24 weeks at her annual appointment. She went to the U/S thinking she'd be max 12 weeks along, but she was obviously wrong by a long-shot. Didn't show until 30-33 weeks but was so little she hid it so no one knew, and she is a HS teacher and coach.
Also, my daughter's adoptive parents recently adopted again (I'm her birthmom). This baby's birthmom found out she was pregnant at 24 weeks and had her at 34 weeks. Talk about a short pregnancy.
Birthmom to A, 1/8- the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

My best friend did not know until she was 18 weeks along, with her 2nd baby. He daughter was about 1.5 years old when it happened. She had been doing a huge cleanse and working out a lot, doing Pilates, etc trying to get into shape for her younger sisters wedding coming up. No matter what she was doing she was not loosing weight and was baffled. She has never had regular periods her whole life so that didn't seem "off" to her. One day at the gym she peed her pants, and that's how she knew something was off and went to the dr. She was not showing at all etc and they did not know at first until bloodwork and a physical exam. In the ultrasound they found out she was already 18 weeks and it was a boy. She was so scared because she had not been taking prenatal's etc and she felt like an idiot for not knowing. Luckily he was perfectly healthy with no complications etc
Just reading these stories, and amongst our group alone we have like 10 episodes. So imagine this times the entire female popluation of the US that can reproduce and you got yourself a series!
This happened to a neighbor of mine. She had a baby and got pregnant very soon after. She didn't realize she was pregnant until she was 4 months. Crazy. I kind of wish I wasn't feeling this pregnancy lately - the MS is awful. But yes it must be terrible if you have been drinking, smoking etc. Scary stuff.
I guess I don't see how they didn't wonder why their stomach grew?! Like the example of the friend who was very fit...was she not showing by 9months?!! I won't judge but I think denial is a powerful tool. I've never met someone 9 months pregnant that didn't look somewhat pregnant!
This happened to my friend's wife. She was feeling off, took a pregnancy test, and it was positive. She told her husband when he got home from work, and a few hours later, started having a ton of pain. They went to the hospital, and she was in labor. Their little boy was born that night weighing about 3lbs, but healthy. It was a total shock to both of them.

I honestly would not think to take a test yet. Ifound out I was pregnant in the ER when I had the stomach flu. I'm still bf my one year old and have not had a pp period. I have no symptoms that I wouldn't attribute to weaning and the hormone changes that go along with it. I had more than enough ms with my son-by this point with him I had already gained more than enough weight (ie toooooo much). I'm sure I would have figured it out eventually, but this pregnancy is 100% opposite from my first, so I can see how it could happen.
Also, it did happen to H's aunt. She had her son on the kitchen floor and had no idea she was pregnant...
Happened to a friend of my moms. She didn't find out until she was 7 months along. She had monthly periods, no symptoms and didn't gain any weight. She ended up having the baby in the toilet a month later.
My co-worker's sister was actually on the show. She has krohn's disease and went to the ER one night thinking she was having a bad attack. Turns out she was full term and in labor! She had no morning sickness, only gained a little weight, and because of the way her uterus was tilted she didn't have a bump. She has a healthy little girl who I think is like 3 or 4 now. Crazy stuff!

These stories are crazy, I can't believe how many of you know someone who went through this! I will say, I can understand not knowing the kicks from gas. I had an anterior placenta and I still felt my son move a lot but it was far less aggressive than what my friends described, never painful, and took well into 20 something weeks before I felt it. If I didn't know I was pregnant it could have passed for gas bubbles all the way to the end. It was very difficult to get DH to feel anything from the outside.
This is why I think it's mostly (and the stories here seems to fit) people who have little to no symptoms and/or other issues that mask the symptoms that make it successful to go so long without knowing. But obviously it does happen!
My first pregnancy only lasted till 12 weeks, but I had killer MS the whole time. This one? Nothing so far. I've had bleeding like a light period, and right before I got pregnant I was having some wonky periods for a few months. Had we not been tracking/temping and testing every month, I wouldn't have known up until...who knows! Plus I already deal with IBS and have a tilted uterus and have never made it more than 12 weeks to know what anything feels like. Crazy, I know.

I had a patient whose best friend didn't find out until she was 20 weeks. She was a heavier set woman and had been told that her and her husband wouldn't be able to have kids. When she started to grow, she thought she had a tumor and went to the doctor. The doctor did a blood test and told her she was pregnant. She ended up giving birth early (I think it was around 7 months) and the baby was completely healthy.
My mom had a patient come in 33 weeks pregnant and she had no idea.
She was on the depo shot and that made her not have a period and gain weight. She went in because she thought her bowels were super constipated and just full. Nope. It was a baby moving.
Yup. We know someone too like this. Got on a roller coaster and was, like, six or seven months. She told me a couple years ago and I've since forgotten the details. Still, crazy. Her daughter was fine and is a teen now. This was neither her first nor her last kid.
Had a coworker that went through this. She normally carried her extra weight in her abdomen. Her water broke and she thought she just peed herself (whaaaaat?) And didn't go to the hospital for 72 hours. The baby was ok thankfully!
A co worker of mine recently found out she was 22 weeks!! She had no symptoms what so ever and only went to the doctors because she was constantly bloated
A guy I used to work with had this happen with his girlfriend. He took her to the ER one night with terrible stomach pains and surprise 5 lb baby girl! The hospital said it was the first baby ever to be born there because they didn't even have an L & D. Apparently she was bungy (sp?) jumping and had traveled to Africa almost right before she went into labor, crazy!
This would never happen to me. One time I missed one birth control pill and despite having doubled up the next day, I still was poas over a week before my period was due. Since having sex for the first time I have lived in a constant state of panic revolving around avoiding pregnancy and now trying to get pregnant. Which is why this neurotic woman cannot understand how it is possible to not know you are pregnant because you know you had sex.
I wouldn't have known I was pregnant with mine unless my SO had forced me to take the test haha. My symptoms so far are fairly common, I get nauseated frequently, my rhinitis could be related to the mass flu/cold epidemic going around, and my constant urination to me working out a lot and drinking a million gallons of water a day. I was on birth control, haven't had a period in over a year. So I had no idea. I wonder how long I wouldn't gone if I hadn't taken the test.
Re: I didn't know I was pregnant
With all of her 5 babies she only had slight food aversions as a symptom.
