RP from SAHM: Arranging 4 kids in Honda Odyssey

Baby #4 is due this week. Right now, we have all three kids in the middle row and have liked that. Was thinking we'd need to remove the driver's side middle seat for access to the back. Then we'd have 2 kids in the middle, and 2 in back. Baby in the middle along with...the 2 year old? Or would it be better to put the 4 year old there so he can help pass her things? The 6 year old and...which? 4 or 2 year old? in the back? Can anyone help with this? TIA!

  • I only have one kid, but grew up with 5 brothers and sisters. I would probably "buddy" the kids up if you can - put the 6 & 2 in the rear, and 4 & baby in the middle. The older of each pair can hand stuff to the younger. I think it would be hard to get in and out of the rear, too, if you have two fixed car seats in the middle.

  • Can the older two or the oldest buckle themselves?  If so to the back they go so you aren't trying to climb in and out to get them secured and out of seats plus if the 2 year old is still RF then your FF kids are facing your RF kids and hey built in entertainment?  I don't know that may actually be an arguement to flip them.

  • When I drive carpool, I put the oldest kid in third row because she can buckle herself up. You don't want to have to climb all the way back there if you don't have to.

  • I have my older two in the back, and the baby and the 2 year old in the middle row.  Same reason as the above posters...the older two can buckle themselves.

We also took out the middle seat in the second row for access to the back.

  • Thanks. I am thinking youngest in the middle, oldest in back. For long road trips maybe we'd re-arrange to use a "buddy system."

  • You'll also have to check where your tethers are in the back. I think my SUV only has one tether back there, so something like that would limit your options.

  • I'm an Odyssey owner with the three kids.  Here's my two cents:

If the oldest two can buckle themselves, or if the 4 year old can at least climb in the seat and get situated by himself, I would set it up so that you can open ONE door (the door that has open space), have the four year old climb into the middle row far seat and the 6 year old climb into the back row far seat, put the baby bucket in the middle row, closer seat, and the two year old will then be easy to help into the third row close seat, since there will be open space in front of him.  Also, if you do it that way you have the open space as a bit of a landing pad to put down your purse/diaper bag, get coats on/off in bad weather, set the baby bucket down for a minute to get a better grip, etc.  From there if you need to finish strapping your four year old you can just do that from the driver's seat after you hop in, and you avoid having to walk around to a second door.

  • I would put oldest (6 and 4) in back seat. I have a 6 year old in the back (he can buckle himself, still in a 5 point harness but will be in high back booster soon I guess). Then I have baby in middle of 2nd row (just switched from bucket to regular rear facing. And 3 year old is next to her behind driver. We didn't need to take out the seat out of 2nd row since even with the bucket next to it it folds and slides forward without an issue. Also - even if you put the 4 year old next to the baby chances are he won't be able to do much for her if she cries (like stick a paci in and hold it). At least mine can't.
