New job new pregnancy

hello! I am hoping to get some advice from the group here...

I started a new job 3 weeks ago and didn't know I was pregnant with #1 until NYE. We've been trying for a year and I recently started metformin for my pcos, not believing it would really work!

It's too early to tell them at this point, but I am nervous that when I do tell them they will be angry with me as I just started and will be taking leave so soon.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to tell them once were ready to?

Re: New job new pregnancy

  • I would wait until at least second tri. Then find out the leave policy. You likely won't qualify for paid leave. Then state it business like "i am pregnant and am due xxx. I would like to take x off. I have secured daycare for my return to work ".

  • I agee with pp. I was in the same boat this year and did the same thing. It work week for me. Just be sure of company policy so thou can plan and also your rights so you van defend them if need be. Good luck and don't let it stress you out.
  • I think everyone is always worried employers will be upset, but I've yet to hear of anyone whose employer actually was. :) Do wait until 2nd trimester. And good luck with your pregnancy!
  • I am in management and we had an employee with whom this happened. She would have known she was pregnant when she accepted her offer, but just barely (like 4-5 weeks) and she informed her boss (my coworker) when she was 12 weeks and just out of orientation. We were happy for her and told her we could hold her job for 12 weeks ala FMLA even though she didn't technically qualify and all of that. But then, toward the end of her pregnancy she started shirking work and midway through her leave she informed us that she would not be returning and that was really, really shitty of her and left the company in a big bind that seriously impacted the work-life balance of several of her coworkers. As long as you don't do that, you're probably fine.

If you are in the US, just know that unless your state has a different law, you won't qualify for FMLA (12 weeks unpaid leave with protection for your job). The federal statute requires you work for your employer for at least 12 months for at least 1,250 hours. So, your employer might be within their rights to grant you however much vacation/sick time you've accrued and nothing more. Hopefully, your employer will be cool and value your contributions (vs the cost of finding a replacement and training them) enough to make it work for you and your family.
  • I had something similar happen with my first. I had just taken a new position in another area of the university where I was working. I had been in that role for 3 months---I stressed out about it so much before telling my boss and she was nothing more than elated for me. Took a huge weight off my shoulders. I would wait until you are closer to 12 weeks. You likely won't be showing much by then anyway.
