Re: Zzzzz...Length of sleep

  • Ds usually falls asleep around 830 sleeps until about 12:30 and then up every 1.5 to 2 hours after that.
  • Loading the player...
  • Whoops I voted wrong! I was worried about everyone that their babies aren't sleeping 7 hours total, not 7 hour stretches. Our first stretch is normally 4-5 hours, followed by a 2-3 hour stretch, and then a 1-2 hour stretch.

  • Last night lucky me LO went down after930. Woke up at 630. Yesturday kinda of the same however slept from 830 to 530 diaper change, fed him then slept a little longer till 8. All in all last 2 nights have been awesome except for waking up to pump once or twice. Really wish I could of enjoy those long hours of sleep just like the way he does. Oh well those smiles I get in the morning from him are well worth it. I keep telling myself that. :-)
  • She was giving me a 6 hour stretch at night until Christmas Eve. Now its been hit or miss. Last night every 3, night before was up every 2. But she hasnt been napoing as well so I think that has a lot to do with it.
  • LO sleeps a 5.5-6 hour stretch on most nights. He slept 7 hours a week ago which awesome, but it only happened that one time and so far no repeats. I'm not greedy though, 6 hours is fine by me! ;)
  • LO usually goes to bed around ten and rarely gets up before 5:00. Last night was her first night in the PNP instead of the bassinet and she slept 7.5 hours for the first stretch.

Now my toddler on the other hand...

  • I voted 2-3 because that's average for my kiddos. I have gotten the occasional 4-6 hr stretch from Drew. But not baby girl, oh no, she likse to eat way too much!

  • I have a unicorn but he is 14 weeks old and ff so there is that. And he doesn't really nap during the day. (His choice not mine)
  • Ugh I hope my kid sleeps some day

    Second this!
Last night we got a 2.5, and a 2 hour stretch all in the RNP (first night that's ever happened), then the last 3 hrs with me. Hope to start getting some consistency soon!

  • Mines a unicorn too, he's been a solid sleeper from the start, 3-4 hours each stretch with a quick feed in the middle, and now for the last 2.5 weeks he's been going down for the night at about 9-930pm and then sleeping until 6:30am. He's FF though, so there's that.
  • DS typically goes down around 9 and sleeps til 7, then gets up to eat and sleeps again until 10. Lately though he's been getting up a few times in the night which I'm now attributing to his teeth that he just cut through the gums.

  • It honestly varies a TON for us.  We had a few nights of unicorn 6 hour stretches, followed by about 5 days of one 3 hour stretch and then 1.5-2 hr stretches (Curse you 3 month growth spurt!). We seem past that now and are back to a 4-5 hour stretch and then 3 hour stretches.
But because it has been so cold (relatively, lol...but they don't build houses with insulation in CA, nor central heat), baby is back to sleeping in the RnP in our bedroom so we don't have to heat her bedroom as well.  The crib transition will have to wait.

Three month growth spurt just ended here and it was awful! We are back to just shy of four hour stretches...hope for longer ones soon. I was hoping they'd happen sooner bc DD is growing well, but nope.

@theresat858‌ you are in so cal, right? In the Bay Area, we definitely have central heat. We got a nest thermostat to control the heat easily for baby.

Yes, San Diego. We have a nest for our heat downstairs, but there are no vents upstairs. I have no idea why one would build a house with "central" heat only on the lower level, since the main time we need the heater is at night... There are stupid wall heaters in the upstairs rooms that are noisy and impossible to control the temp with.

Other than this recent cold snap though, you guys have pretty perfect weather year round so hopefully it isn't too much of a bother!
  • I have a unicorn baby who has been sleeping consistently from 9 to 3 or 4. He usually wakes up to eat and then goes back to sleep for 2-3 more hours before he's up for the day. I'm hoping the pattern continues especially seeing that I return to work this tuesday.
  • We can reliably get 6-7 hrs, but have ventured into the 7+ zone a few times.  He's usually down around 9 - 4ish.  He eats and then goes down for another 3-4 hrs.  We don't get any reliable naps during the day though.  He will nap in the car and a little in his bouncer in the afternoon, but nothing that I can rely on.

  • The last few nights I've gotten 4.5 hour stretches flowed by a couple 3s. usually we get 3s and 2s. I'm hoping this new trend continues!

I didn't know about the 3 month growth spurt. That would explain the bad sleep we had a few weeks back!
  • When we breastfed it was 6 hours, up to eat, then down for 2-3 more. After we switched to all formula, it turned to 8 hours straight through. 11-7 every night is fabulous, I just hope it lasts.

Hmm, I'd say she takes in about 24-28oz in a day. She's weird about drinking her bottles and sometimes will just have an ounce or 2, then will gorge a little bit later. It's hard to "track" how often she eats because it's kind of sporadic.

She drinks the most in the couple hours right before bed (which is 8pm). She takes down about 10-12 ounces in 2 bottles right before bed. I make sure she's stuffed :)

Hm, I may have to try changing S's feedings a bit. He's 30-32oz per day, at a regular 3.5-4 hours a day, and I think that keeps him from sleeping more that 6 hours at night. I'm not complaining about that because it's great, I'm just trying to figure out how to get him past it. He eats 6 ounces or so in his last feeding, sometimes more, but he's been known to take that much at other feedings also. I can try to feed him twice closer together before bed....

I feel like he's overly scheduled lol

  • I'm a little bitter this time around, especially when people assume ds sleeps through the night because we are FFing. Last night he slept from 11-4, which isn't terrible, but I wish he would go down around 9 so I could have an hour or two to myself.

  • Ds sleeps about 10-11 hours at night but he cat naps during the day. He is ff and eats every 2-3 hours during the day and then has two large bottles before bed. It would be nice if he would take even an hour straight nap during the day so I could get stuff done, but I'm very thankful for my sleep at night.

I kind of wish DD would drink normal bottles at normal intervals but like I said, she's very temperamental about feedings. For some reason she just gorges herself right up until bed time then literally passes out. She just wants to constantly eat for like 2 hours in the evening, then has another bottle when I'm doing her bed time routine, then she's out. And she sleeps for a crazy long time.

DS was very structured and much more routine when it came to eating but he wasn't this good of a sleeper like DD is. All kids are so different.

Sounds like the equivalent of cluster feeding. All 3 of mine have done this in the evenings, and I assume it's because there's something instinctual that causes them to want to fill up before bedtime. This time we're EFF now, but even with the first 2 and BFing, around 3-4 months I couldn't keep up with the demand of the evening feeding, so I started giving a 4oz bottle of formula in order to decrease the nursing session and it worked like a charm.
  • I have a unicorn I guess. DS has been a great sleeper since day one *knock on wood* don't want to jinx myself. In the beginning it was 3-4 hrs eat and right back to sleep, repeat. He is both BF and FF, but he has always had formula for MOTN feedings because he sleeps longer.  Right now he goes to bed around 9 and gets up around 6. He also sleeps a lot during the day.

I am actually concerned that he sleeps too much. I asked his pedi and he said it is fine, but I will be bringing it up again at his 2 month appt tomorrow.

As long as your LO is eating enough in a 24 hour period and gaining weight, Pedi's usually aren't concerned. I had that same fear with my baby that sleeps a ton.
Thats basically what he told me when I brought it up to him before. I just worry about every little thing.
